What Exactly Is 'Play Mode'?
Imagine you stumble upon a fascinating 'Ask Me Anything' or a hilarious debate on a subreddit. Instead of scrolling through hundreds of comments, you could press 'Play'. This new feature, currently in a limited test, transforms text-based posts and their
comment threads into a short video. AI-generated voices read the original post and a selection of replies aloud, while the corresponding text is highlighted on screen, much like subtitles. Users can toggle between the traditional 'Read' view and the new 'Play' mode. The original text thread remains completely untouched and accessible. This test began rolling out on August 17, 2026, for web users, with mobile apps following, but is currently limited to select English-language posts.
Why Is Reddit Doing This Now?
The strategy is twofold: capturing attention and reclaiming its own content. For years, third-party creators have built massive audiences on platforms like TikTok and YouTube by simply reading interesting Reddit threads aloud, often over unrelated video game footage. These videos generate millions of views and revenue that Reddit itself never sees. As CEO Steve Huffman noted, an entire genre of 'spoken Reddit' content already exists off-platform. By creating a native version, Reddit aims to keep that engagement within its own ecosystem. The feature also caters to modern consumption habits, allowing users to listen to content while multitasking, such as during a commute or while exercising.
The All-Important 'Voiced by AI' Label
Perhaps the most significant detail of this new feature is a small but crucial disclaimer that appears with every clip: “Real conversation voiced by AI.” In an era of deepfakes and growing mistrust of artificial content, this transparency is a deliberate choice. Reddit is making it clear that while the words are from real users, the voices are not. This approach distinguishes the feature from potentially deceptive uses of AI and aligns with a broader push for ethical technology deployment. By clearly labeling the content, Reddit hopes to build user trust while still innovating, finding a balance that feels authentic to its community.
The Technology and Its Limitations
The feature uses multi-voice text-to-speech technology to 'bring real human conversations to life'. This means different AI-generated voices are used for the original poster and the various commenters, creating a more dynamic listening experience than a single, monotonous voice. However, the technology isn't perfect. Early reports note that the AI can sometimes struggle with the cadence of speech or mispronounce usernames and community-specific slang. Furthermore, Reddit is currently curating which comments are included in the narrated video, meaning the 'Play' version may not always reflect the highest-voted or most representative replies from the full thread.
A Broader Push into Video and AI
This experiment doesn't exist in a vacuum. It’s part of a larger strategic pivot for the company, which went public in March 2024. Reddit has been actively expanding its video capabilities, recently introducing video comments, which already account for over 10% of all video posts on the platform. The company is also integrating AI in other areas, such as its 'Reddit Answers' conversational search tool and AI-powered moderation features. By developing these tools in-house, Reddit is leveraging its vast archive of human conversation to compete with other tech giants and create new ways for its user base, which has surpassed half a billion weekly active uniques, to engage with content.
