In India, a hot beverage is more than just a drink; it's a staple of daily life, a gesture of hospitality, and a comforting pause in a busy day. Whether it's a cutting chai from a street vendor or a carefully brewed filter coffee at home, we like it hot.
However, this preference for scalding sips comes with a potential health concern. The issue isn't the tea or coffee itself, but the intense temperature. When a liquid is too hot, it can cause thermal injury to the delicate lining of our oesophagus—the tube that carries food and drink from the throat to the stomach. This isn't a one-time problem but a cumulative one. Each very hot sip contributes to a cycle of low-grade damage and repair that, over years, can create problems.
Understanding Oesophageal Cell Strain
The term "cell strain" refers to the stress and damage inflicted on the cells of the oesophageal wall. When you swallow a liquid that's excessively hot, it essentially scalds the tissue. Your body's natural response is to repair this damage by replacing the injured cells. While this healing process is normal, the problem arises with repetition. Chronic thermal injury forces the cells in your oesophageal lining into a state of constant, rapid turnover. This persistent cycle of injury, inflammation, and regeneration can increase the chance of errors during cell replication. Over time, these errors can lead to cellular changes that may heighten the risk of developing serious conditions, including oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma, a type of cancer. After reviewing numerous studies, they classified drinking beverages hotter than 65°C (149°F) as "probably carcinogenic to humans". This classification places very hot drinks in the same risk category as things like red meat and indoor wood smoke. Studies from regions where drinks like tea and maté are traditionally consumed at around 70°C have consistently shown a higher risk of oesophageal cancer. To put this in perspective, coffee is often served from commercial machines at temperatures between 85°C and 90°C. This means that letting your drink cool down for a few minutes is not just for comfort—it's a significant step in reducing potential harm.
It's About Temperature, Not The Drink
It is essential to clarify that the risk is not associated with coffee or tea themselves. In fact, when consumed at safe temperatures, both beverages have been linked to various health benefits. The IARC's research specifically points to the temperature as the responsible factor. The findings are consistent across different types of beverages, whether it's tea, coffee, hot water, or even very hot soups. A large study in the UK involving nearly one million people found that those who described their drinks as "very hot" had a threefold higher risk of developing oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma compared to those who drank them "warm". This reinforces the message that the heat, not the habit, is what needs managing.
Simple Adjustments for Safer Sipping
Reducing this risk doesn't require giving up your favourite beverages. It just calls for a small adjustment in your routine. The simplest method is patience: just wait a few minutes before you start drinking. Let your freshly boiled or brewed drink rest for at least four to five minutes. Another easy trick is to add a splash of cold milk or water to bring the temperature down instantly. You can also test the temperature by taking a small, tentative sip first. If it feels uncomfortably hot in your mouth, it is certainly too hot for your oesophagus. By making these minor changes, you can continue to enjoy the comfort and energy of your daily chai or coffee while significantly lowering the potential for long-term cellular strain on your oesophageal tissue.
