This translates to a significant net positive, with India recording 83,100 AI hires against roughly 32,000 jobs lost or changed due to the technology between 2022 and August 2026. The momentum is undeniable. Job platforms are seeing a hiring surge for AI and machine learning roles, with Naukri.com reporting a 33% year-on-year jump in July 2026. LinkedIn's data further reinforces this trend, with its CEO noting that AI engineering jobs in India are growing at a staggering 51% annually. This data paints a clear picture: the AI revolution in India is not one of job destruction, but of job transformation and creation.
Hottest Roles: Where the Demand Is
The growth in AI jobs is not uniform; specific roles are experiencing explosive demand. The title of ‘Prompt Engineer’ has rapidly become one of the most sought-after positions, topping LinkedIn’s list of fastest-growing jobs in India. This role, which barely existed a few years ago, involves designing and refining inputs for large language models (LLMs) to produce desired outputs. Data from Naukri shows postings for prompt engineers have grown 380% since 2024. Alongside this, roles like Generative AI Developer and LLM Developer are also seeing a massive spike in demand. Foundational roles remain critical, with Machine Learning Engineer having the highest volume of job openings. Other high-growth positions include Data Scientist, MLOps Engineer (who manage the lifecycle of machine learning models), Computer Vision Engineer, and AI Product Manager. These roles are concentrated within the technology sector, which accounts for over 90% of new AI-related hires.
The New Skillset: What Employers Want Now
As roles evolve, so do the skills required. For jobseekers looking to enter or advance in the AI field, a specific set of technical and soft skills has become non-negotiable. At the core, proficiency in Python and SQL remains fundamental. Beyond that, expertise in machine learning frameworks like PyTorch is essential. Global Capability Centers (GCCs) of multinational corporations are now leading AI hiring, often outpacing even traditional IT services firms. Industries like retail, manufacturing, and finance are also heavily investing in AI talent to drive efficiency and innovation.
The Fresher's Challenge: Bridging the Experience Gap
While the overall picture is rosy, there is a critical challenge, particularly for those just starting their careers. The data reveals a growing skills gap: the new AI jobs require advanced, specialised skills that displaced workers or fresh graduates may not possess. This has created a two-tiered market where demand is soaring for experienced professionals, while some companies report a decline in entry-level hiring for certain roles. For freshers, the key is to proactively bridge this gap. The move towards skills-first hiring provides a clear pathway.
