A Global Stamp of Approval
TasteAtlas, an experiential travel guide to traditional food, has become a significant voice in the world of gastronomy. Its annual rankings are not decided by a small panel of critics but are based on audience ratings from across the globe, reflecting
the authentic opinions of real diners. The list celebrates the world's most beloved culinary traditions, and India's consistent presence high on this list is a testament to its widespread and growing appeal. For years, Indian cuisine has been winning hearts, moving beyond the simple label of 'spicy' to be appreciated for its complex layers of flavour, history, and regional diversity.
India's Place on the World Stage
In the 2025-26 list of the 100 Best Cuisines, India secured the 13th position with an impressive score of 4.43 out of 5. While culinary giants like Italy, Greece, and Peru took the top spots, India's ranking places it ahead of many other celebrated food cultures, including the United States, Vietnam, and South Korea. This solidifies Indian food's position not as a niche or exotic choice, but as a mainstream global favourite. The ranking considers ratings for hundreds of dishes and food products, reflecting a comprehensive appreciation for what India brings to the world's table.
Our Reigning Breads and Spices
Interestingly, some of India's highest-rated items are its beloved breads. Butter Garlic Naan and Amritsari Kulcha both received stellar ratings of 4.7. These aren't fancy, occasion-specific dishes; they are the comforting staples that Indians themselves cherish daily. Parotta, another flatbread favourite, also scored high marks. The list also gives a special mention to Garam Masala, the quintessential Indian spice blend, acknowledging that the heart of our cuisine lies in the masterful use of spices. This recognition shows a deeper understanding of Indian food, celebrating the components that give our dishes their unique character.
The Undisputed Crowd-Pleasers
When it comes to specific dishes, the list reads like a who's who of Indian comfort food. Murgh Makhani, or Butter Chicken, a dish that originated in Delhi in the 1950s, continues to be a global ambassador for Indian food. Close behind is the iconic Hyderabadi Biryani, a dish celebrated for its aromatic spices and rich history. These dishes represent the soul of Indian cooking for many around the world—rich, flavourful, and deeply satisfying. Other popular dishes that received high ratings include Tikka, Masala Dosa, and Chole Bhature, showcasing the sheer variety that Indian cuisine offers.
Beyond the Plate
The recognition from TasteAtlas extends beyond just individual dishes. Mumbai was celebrated as one of the world's best food cities, securing the 5th spot globally. This highlights the vibrant street food culture and the legendary eateries that make the city a food lover's paradise. From the humble Vada Pav to the bustling dining halls of restaurants like Shree Thaker Bhojanalay, the city's culinary landscape is a major contributor to India's global food reputation. This wider acknowledgment celebrates not just what we eat, but the culture and atmosphere in which we enjoy it.
