The city earning this global recognition is Mumbai. In a first, India's financial capital has made its debut on the 2026 'Work from Anywhere Index', a global ranking compiled by the International Workplace Group (IWG). Mumbai is the only Indian city to
be featured, placing it on the world map for this modern style of travel and work. It secured an impressive score of 77, ranking ahead of other major international hubs like London and Miami, signalling its rising appeal to global professionals.
What Is This Index and Why Does It Matter?
The annual IWG Index evaluates cities on a range of criteria crucial for a successful workcation. It’s not just about having a nice beach or historical monuments. The index looks at practical factors like the cost and quality of accommodation, transport affordability, broadband speed, climate, food, culture, and, importantly, the availability of flexible workspaces. Bangkok, Tokyo, and Barcelona took the top three spots in the 2026 edition. Mumbai's inclusion shows that the city's infrastructure is now seen as mature enough to support the demanding needs of professionals who work while they travel.
So, What Did Mumbai Get Right?
Mumbai scored particularly high in several key areas that make a workcation practical and enjoyable. The report highlighted the city's affordable transport, which is crucial for getting around a sprawling metropolis. It also received top marks for its accommodation options and favourable climate. Crucially, the city's robust network of coworking and flexible workspaces was a major factor. This aligns with broader trends, as reports show India has one of the world's most mature flexible office markets, with massive growth in shared office spaces across its major cities.

The city lost points on its broadband speed and quality, a critical factor for any remote worker that can be a source of frustration. Additionally, its scores were lower in the 'happiness index' and the availability of local cultural events compared to some other top-ranking cities. These are important metrics for the 'cation' part of a workcation, suggesting that while the 'work' infrastructure is growing, the overall quality of life and leisure experience has room to evolve to truly compete with the world's best.
