What is Satellite Deorbiting?
Satellite deorbiting is the process of safely removing a spacecraft from orbit at the end of its life. For satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) like Starlink, this means guiding them to re-enter Earth's atmosphere, where they are designed to burn up completely.
This isn't just a matter of letting them fall; it's a carefully managed procedure. SpaceX uses a controlled, propulsive deorbit, using the satellite's own thrusters to lower its altitude in a predictable and safe manner. This active approach is much faster and safer than an uncontrolled descent, allowing the satellite to remain maneuverable and avoid collisions on its way down.
A Proactive Approach to a Crowded Sky
With thousands of active satellites, SpaceX regularly decommissions older models to make way for new technology or to proactively remove satellites that show potential for future failure. Between December 2025 and May 2026, for instance, the company deorbited 260 satellites. This is part of a deliberate lifecycle management strategy. Instead of waiting for a satellite to fail and become uncontrollable space junk, SpaceX initiates a controlled descent while the craft is still fully functional. This proactive stance is crucial for mitigating the risk of orbital collisions, a growing concern as LEO becomes more congested with hardware from various operators.

During a satellite's controlled descent, which can take several months, SpaceX shares high-fidelity positional data and future trajectory predictions with other satellite operators and launch providers multiple times a day. This information, known as an ephemeris, allows everyone operating in space to have a clear and constantly updated picture of where the deorbiting satellite is and where it will be. This level of transparency is vital for space traffic management, helping other operators plan their maneuvers and ensuring that a deorbiting Starlink does not pose a threat to their own assets.
Targeting a Safe Re-entry
While Starlink satellites are designed to completely disintegrate upon re-entry, SpaceX takes the extra step of targeting their final descent over unpopulated areas of the open ocean. This procedure goes above and beyond current regulatory requirements and is designed to minimize any potential risk to people, aircraft, or ships. Achieving this requires maintaining control of the satellite down to very low altitudes, a technically challenging feat.
