On July 16, 2026, Mahindra & Mahindra announced that its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Chakan had crossed the three-million-vehicle production mark. The landmark vehicle was the BE 6, an all-electric SUV, a choice that symbolically points
towards the future of mobility. What makes this achievement particularly noteworthy is the incredible acceleration in production. While the plant took 107 months to build its first million vehicles after starting operations in 2009, the most recent million were produced in just 27 months. This rapid scaling reflects not only robust consumer demand but also the successful integration of advanced manufacturing technologies that have drastically improved efficiency and output.
The Chakan Phenomenon
Once a quiet area on the outskirts of Pune, Chakan has transformed over the past two decades into one of India's most vital industrial corridors, often dubbed the "Detroit of India". Its strategic location, with excellent connectivity to Pune and Mumbai via major expressways and proximity to the JNPT port, provides a significant logistical advantage for both domestic sales and exports. The region is home to a dense ecosystem of global automotive giants like Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, alongside domestic leaders such as Bajaj Auto and Mahindra. This has fostered a robust network of ancillary suppliers and component manufacturers, creating a self-sustaining cluster that drives innovation, employment, and economic activity. The Mahindra plant alone, spread across 657 acres, produces 19 different models and over 450 variants, which are sold in India and exported to markets like South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. More than 50% of its energy needs are met through renewable sources, with its EV manufacturing operations running entirely on green energy. The plant is also certified as water-positive and Zero Waste to Landfill, setting a benchmark for responsible industrial growth in India.
