What Exactly Is EOS-05?
EOS-05, also known as GISAT-1A, is an advanced Earth observation satellite developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Launched on September 4, 2026, aboard a GSLV-F17 rocket, its primary distinction is its orbit. Unlike most Indian observation satellites
that operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and circle the planet, EOS-05 is designed for a Geosynchronous Orbit (GEO). This means it will be positioned approximately 36,000 kilometres above the Earth, allowing it to move in sync with the planet's rotation. The result is that it can continuously monitor the same large geographical area—namely, the Indian subcontinent and its surrounding oceans. Weighing around 2,367 kg, it's a significant and sophisticated piece of technology, representing a major milestone as India's first dedicated imaging satellite in this high-altitude orbit.
A Game-Changer in Orbit
The key difference between EOS-05 and its predecessors lies in its 'persistent stare' capability. Satellites in LEO pass over a specific location for only a few minutes at a time, with hours or even days between revisits. EOS-05, from its geosynchronous perch, can provide near real-time imagery of a selected area every five minutes and scan the entire Indian landmass every 30 minutes. This is a dramatic shift from periodic snapshots to continuous monitoring. It carries powerful imaging instruments, including multispectral and hyperspectral sensors, which can capture detailed images across different light spectrums. One of its cameras features a 42-metre spatial resolution, a remarkable feat for a satellite in such a high orbit.
The Mission's Core Objectives
The applications for EOS-05 are vast and vital for the nation. A primary objective is rapid disaster management. The satellite can track the development of cyclones, floods, forest fires, and cloudbursts almost as they happen, providing crucial data for timely warnings and response efforts. Beyond natural disasters, it will significantly boost agricultural monitoring by assessing crop health, soil moisture, and changes in vegetation over the seasons. Environmental monitoring, including tracking changes in land use and water bodies, is another key function. This constant stream of data will enhance services across multiple civilian sectors, from weather forecasting to resource management.

A Successful Launch After Setbacks
The successful launch of EOS-05 marked a significant achievement for ISRO, ending a roughly eight-month hiatus following a few challenging missions. The GSLV rocket, sometimes nicknamed the 'naughty boy' for its mixed early record, performed admirably, placing the satellite precisely into its initial Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. From there, EOS-05 used its own onboard propulsion system to perform a series of orbit-raising maneuvers to reach its final operational altitude.
