A New Bloom in the High Desert
Adding a completely new dimension to the region's tourism, Ladakh has unveiled its stunning twin flower fields, now open to the public. Located at a breathtaking altitude of 10,600 feet, these fields are recognised as the highest in the world. Inaugurated
on September 17, 2026, by Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor, the project transforms 40 acres of high-altitude terrain into a vibrant carpet of over 2.5 million flowers. This initiative not only creates a unique spectacle for visitors but also aims to diversify local agriculture and create new livelihood opportunities for the community through floriculture. It stands as a pioneering experiment in high-altitude horticulture, proving that even in a challenging climate, immense beauty can bloom.
Where to Find This Floral Wonderland
The twin flower fields are situated in two separate locations near Leh: Choglamsar and Stakna. Both sites are easily accessible for tourists staying in and around the main town. Choglamsar, in particular, is a well-known area just a few kilometres from Leh, making it a convenient stop on any itinerary. These locations were chosen for a large-scale project designed to introduce commercial cultivation of high-value flowers. The fields serve as both a tourist destination and a demonstration centre for local farmers and self-help groups to learn modern farming techniques.
What You Will See
Prepare to be mesmerised by a sea of colour set against the dramatic backdrop of the Himalayan peaks. The fields primarily feature around 2.4 million Lilium flowers and one lakh Gladiolus flowers, creating a dense, multicoloured display. The sight of these delicate, high-value flowers thriving in the cold, arid environment is a testament to the ambitious agricultural project. The Choglamsar field was developed in just two months, with its first blooms appearing in early September. The Stakna field, planted slightly later, is expected to see its flowers bloom towards the end of October. This staggered planting ensures a longer flowering season for visitors to enjoy.
Planning Your Visit: Timings and Fees
The flower fields officially opened their gates to the public on September 18, 2026. The Choglamsar field is expected to be in full bloom through September and into early October, while the blooms at Stakna will be a highlight for those visiting later in the season. The entry fee is very nominal, set at ₹25 for adults and ₹10 for children. This makes it an accessible and affordable addition to any Ladakh trip. The revenue collected from ticket sales will be used for the maintenance and upkeep of the gardens. Visitors are encouraged to be mindful of the fragile ecosystem and follow any guidelines provided on-site to help preserve the beauty of the fields.
More Than Just a Pretty Picture
While the visual appeal is undeniable, the flower fields represent a significant step towards sustainable development in Ladakh. The project is a key part of an initiative to promote floriculture as a viable alternative income source for the region's farmers. By serving as a training and demonstration centre, the fields will empower local communities with skills in scientific cultivation and post-harvest management. In its first year, the Agriculture Department is managing the project before handing it over to local cooperatives. So, a visit to these fields is not just about appreciating the flowers; it's also about supporting a forward-thinking initiative that benefits the people and economy of Ladakh.
