Understanding Current vs. Permanent Address
Before you begin, it's important to understand the distinction between a 'current' and 'permanent' address. A permanent address is a long-term, stable location you're tied to, like a family home. Government agencies often use this for critical notices.
A current address is where you presently reside, which might be a rented apartment for work or study. For most day-to-day services, from bank KYC to online deliveries, it is your current residential address that needs to be updated. The headline's promise of preserving the "current status" often refers to keeping your permanent address on file while updating your correspondence or present address. This is possible for many documents, ensuring you receive timely communication without altering your permanent records.
First Step: Update Your Aadhaar Card
Your Aadhaar card should be the first document you update. It is the foundational proof of address for updating most other records, including bank accounts and your PAN card. You have two main options for this: online via the myAadhaar portal or offline at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. For an online update, you'll need your Aadhaar-linked mobile number to receive an OTP. You will have to upload a scanned copy of a valid proof of your new address, such as a registered rent agreement, a recent utility bill (electricity, water, or gas), or a bank statement showing the new address. Once submitted, you'll get an Update Request Number (URN) to track the status. An offline update requires you to visit a center with your original documents for scanning.
Next: Align Your PAN Card Address
While your PAN card itself does not display an address, the backend records at the Income Tax Department must be current for tax filings and refunds. The simplest way to update your PAN address is through the Aadhaar-based e-KYC process, which is offered free of cost. You can do this through the portals of either UTIITSL or Protean (formerly NSDL). The process involves entering your PAN and Aadhaar numbers, after which an OTP is sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number. Upon successful verification, your address as per your Aadhaar database is automatically updated in your PAN records. You will receive a confirmation via email and SMS.
Passport Address: A Reissue is Required
Unlike Aadhaar, you cannot simply update the address on an existing passport; you must apply for a 'reissue' of the passport with the new address. This process can be initiated online through the Passport Seva portal. You'll need to fill out the application form, select "Address Change" as the reason, pay the fee, and book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK). For your appointment, you will need to bring your original old passport, self-attested copies of its first and last two pages, and valid proof of your new address. Accepted proofs include an updated Aadhaar card, recent utility bills, or a registered rent agreement.
Finalizing Other Essential Updates
With an updated Aadhaar, changing your address for other services becomes much simpler. For bank accounts, you can typically update your KYC details by visiting a branch or through net banking, using your new e-Aadhaar as proof. Similarly, for your Voter ID card, you can apply for a change of address online through the National Voters' Services Portal or by submitting Form 8 at a local election office. For your driving license, you need to apply for an address change at the local Regional Transport Office (RTO) with the required application form and address proof. Don't forget to update your address for utility connections, insurance policies, and your Employee Provident Fund (EPF) records, which can often be done online through their respective portals.
