The numbers paint a clear picture of a nation charging ahead. Indian enterprises are global leaders in implementing AI at scale, embedding it in everything from product development to marketing. One recent study from Salesforce found that workers in India are 45%
more likely than the global average to consider AI a core part of their daily workflow, the highest among all markets surveyed. This enthusiasm is backed by a general optimism. A comprehensive KPMG report noted that 90% of Indians approve of AI, and 76% are willing to trust it in principle—a figure dramatically higher than the global average of 46%. This indicates a powerful combination of cultural openness and professional urgency to integrate what many see as a transformative technology.
The Daily Dose of Doubt
Beneath the surface of this rapid adoption lies a deep-seated skepticism. The very same Salesforce study that highlighted India's world-leading adoption also found that 49% of Indian workers identify as 'AI skeptics', a rate higher than the global average. This isn't a contradiction; it's the reality of working with current-generation AI. Professionals are using the tools because they feel the pressure to keep up, but they are not taking the output at face value. A Microsoft survey revealed that 86% of users treat AI output as a starting point, not a final answer. This constant need for verification shows a clear lack of confidence. The feeling is widespread, with another study noting that only about a third of employees feel 'very confident' in their use of AI.
Why the Trust Gap Exists
The reasons for this trust gap are practical, not philosophical. Workers in India report the highest rate of unsuccessful AI pilots globally, at 38%. The primary reasons cited are a lack of business context in AI tools, overly generic outputs, and insufficient training. Many have been burned by AI 'hallucinations'—confident but completely fabricated answers. Globally, one study found that over half of employees using AI have made mistakes in their work because of it. Beyond accuracy, there are major concerns about data privacy and the authenticity of AI-generated content. With 71% of Indians expressing uncertainty about being able to trust online content, the fear of misinformation spilling into professional work is a significant barrier to blind faith.

This skepticism, however, might be a healthy and necessary stage in our relationship with AI.
