The Golden Window for Booking
Timing is everything, and Google's data pinpoints the 'sweet spot' for booking different types of trips. For domestic flights within the US, the lowest prices are typically found 39 days before departure, with the best deals appearing in a window of 22
to 57 days out. Holiday travel requires more foresight. For Christmas 2026, the best deals are expected 56 days in advance, meaning late October and mid-November are prime booking times. For trips to Europe, the advice is to book as early as possible, as prices tend to only go up, with the lowest fares found 90 days or more before departure. However, trips to Mexico and the Caribbean have a closer booking window, with the cheapest tickets often appearing around 43 days out.
Your Travel Days Matter Most
An old travel myth suggests that buying your ticket on a Tuesday will unlock massive savings. Google's data debunks this. While booking mid-week (Wednesday, in the latest analysis) is marginally cheaper than on a weekend, the savings are minimal—around 1.4%. The real savings come from which days you choose to fly. Flying on a weekday is significantly cheaper than on a weekend. According to the data, departing on a Monday and returning on a Tuesday or Wednesday can save you an average of 14% compared to popular weekend travel itineraries. For domestic trips, that saving can be as high as 20% versus flying out and back on a Sunday.
Consider a Connection to Save
In a world that prizes convenience, non-stop flights are often the most coveted. However, that direct route comes at a premium. Google's analysis shows that non-stop tickets are, on average, 20% more expensive than itineraries with one or more layovers. If your travel plans are flexible and you don't mind a brief stop, opting for a connecting flight is one of the most reliable ways to cut down on costs. This is especially true for long-haul international flights, where the savings can add up to a significant amount, freeing up more of your budget for the destination itself.
Use Technology to Your Advantage
You do not have to manually check prices every day to find the best deal. Tools within Google Flights are designed to automate this process for you. By setting up a price tracking alert for a specific route and date, you will receive an email notification if the fare changes significantly. For travellers with flexible plans, you can even track prices for 'Any dates' to find the cheapest time to go. Furthermore, Google has rolled out a price guarantee feature on select itineraries. If you book a flight with this badge, Google will monitor the price and refund you the difference via Google Pay if the fare drops after you purchase, giving you peace of mind that you got a good deal.
