The New Apex Predator
Just when you thought the Lamborghini Urus couldn't get more extreme, the Italian marque has introduced its new flagship: the Urus SE Performante. This model takes the recently launched plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Urus SE and dials everything up to eleven,
following the Performante philosophy of reducing weight, sharpening dynamics, and extracting every ounce of power. The result is the most powerful Urus ever built, boasting a combined output of 812 CV (801 horsepower) and a colossal 1000 Nm of torque from its twin-turbo V8 engine and electric motor. This isn't just a minor update; it's a statement piece designed to sit at the absolute peak of the high-performance SUV segment, blending hybrid efficiency with the raw, visceral experience Lamborghini is known for.
A Sharper, Smarter Gearbox
At the heart of the Performante’s enhanced character is a specifically recalibrated eight-speed automatic transmission. While the hardware remains the same as the standard SE, Lamborghini’s engineers have implemented a major software update focused on one thing: driver engagement. This recalibration significantly reduces response times and minimizes what's known as 'torque lag'—the momentary delay between pressing the accelerator and feeling the full force of the engine. For the driver, this translates into quicker, more decisive shifts and a powertrain that feels instantly reactive to every input. Power management is entrusted to this smarter transmission, ensuring the immense force from both the V8 engine and the electric motor is delivered with heightened precision and a sportier feel. The goal was to make this powerful hybrid feel as connected and responsive as one of the brand's super sports cars.
Power, With a Hybrid Twist
The recalibrated transmission works in perfect synergy with the advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain. The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is paired with a synchronous electric motor strategically placed within the transmission housing. This motor acts as a power booster for the V8 and also allows the Urus SE Performante to travel for over 60 kilometres on electric power alone. While the hybrid system adds significant weight compared to the previous non-hybrid Urus Performante, engineers managed to shed about 32 kg from the standard Urus SE through the extensive use of carbon fibre for components like the hood and roof, as well as a titanium Akrapovič exhaust system. This meticulous focus on optimisation results in staggering performance figures: 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 312 km/h.
More Than a Powertrain Upgrade
Lamborghini didn't stop at the engine and gearbox. The Urus SE Performante receives a comprehensive chassis and aerodynamic overhaul to manage its immense power. A new AURA dual-chamber air suspension system makes its debut, a significant upgrade designed to dramatically improve handling. The company claims it halves body roll during aggressive driving while also reducing vibrations by 25% for a more comfortable ride compared to the previous-generation Performante. Aerodynamic efficiency is also a major focus, with a new rear spoiler and the largest diffuser ever fitted to an Urus. These changes result in a 23% increase in downforce compared to the standard Urus SE, pushing the SUV onto the road for greater high-speed stability. Even the brakes receive enhanced cooling thanks to new dedicated ducts, ensuring consistent stopping power.
Unleashing a Rally Mode
Perhaps one of the most surprising additions is an all-new 'Rally' driving mode, described by Lamborghini as an "absolute novelty" for the vehicle. This mode is specifically calibrated to deliver maximum excitement on loose surfaces like gravel or dirt roads. It adjusts the suspension and directs more torque to the rear wheels, allowing for controlled oversteer and a more playful driving experience off the tarmac. The inclusion of a Rally mode on a high-end, hybrid Super SUV underscores Lamborghini's commitment to delivering versatile and thrilling performance, no matter the terrain. It’s a feature that proves the Performante is built not just for the racetrack, but for pure, unadulterated driving fun.
