A Route of Promise and Peril
The proposed Vande Bharat service aims to connect Karnataka's tech capital, Bengaluru, with the coastal hub of Mangaluru, promising a significant reduction in travel time and a boost to tourism and commerce for the entire region. However, this isn't just
another railway line. The route cuts directly through the formidable Western Ghats, presenting one of Indian Railways' most significant operational challenges. The key hurdle is the 55-kilometre Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Road ghat section, a stretch of track known for its stunning beauty and extreme difficulty. For the Vande Bharat to be approved, it must first prove it can conquer this terrain.
The Ghat Section Gauntlet
The Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya section is an engineering marvel defined by extreme conditions. The line features a steep gradient of 1 in 50, meaning the track rises one metre for every 50 metres travelled. To navigate the hilly landscape, the line passes through approximately 57 tunnels and over 226 bridges, and incorporates 108 sharp curves. This combination of steep inclines and winding track makes maintaining speed, control, and especially braking, a tremendous challenge for any train. The area is also prone to landslides during the monsoon, adding another layer of operational risk. Historically, conventional trains have required the use of additional 'banker' locomotives to push them up the steep inclines, a solution not suitable for a modern, self-propelled trainset like the Vande Bharat.
More Than Just a Speed Test
The trials, which commenced in mid-August 2026, are far more comprehensive than a simple speed check. They are being conducted by experts from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) to assess a range of critical parameters. A specially manufactured 20-car Vande Bharat rake, equipped with a crucial Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system, is being used. This system is designed to automatically apply the brakes if the train exceeds the mandated speed limit of around 30 km/h on the ghat section. Testers are meticulously evaluating the train's stability on sharp curves, its acceleration on inclines, and, most importantly, its braking performance and controllability on steep descents. The success of these tests will determine if the Vande Bharat can operate safely without the need for traditional support locomotives.
Unlocking Coastal Connectivity
If the trials are successful and receive the necessary safety clearances, the introduction of this Vande Bharat service would be a landmark achievement. It would provide significantly faster and more comfortable connectivity between Bengaluru and the vital coastal districts, benefiting students, professionals, and tourists alike. The service is expected to be a major boon for tourism in both the coastal region and areas along the route, like Hassan. For Indian Railways, a successful run would represent a major engineering and operational victory, proving the capability of its flagship train on one of the nation's most demanding railway corridors. It would set a precedent for expanding modern rail services into other regions with similarly challenging terrain.
