and digital infrastructure at a major summit. This includes massive commitments from domestic conglomerates like Reliance Industries and the Adani Group, who are planning to spend over $100 billion each in the coming years on AI-focused infrastructure, a significant portion of which is for data centres. They are joined by global tech titans like Amazon, Google, and NTT, who are also pouring billions into building and expanding their cloud infrastructure across the country. This flood of capital is set to more than double India's data centre capacity in just a few years, transforming the country into one of the largest data hubs in the Asia-Pacific region.
Why India, and Why Now?
Several powerful forces are converging to make India the world's most attractive market for data centre investment. The primary driver is data itself. With a massive population rapidly embracing digital services, from streaming and online shopping to 5G connectivity, the sheer volume of data being generated is exploding. Compounding this is a strategic push from the government. Initiatives like 'Digital India' have accelerated digitisation, while crucial legislation like the Digital Personal Data Protection Act of 2023 has created 'data localization' requirements. In simple terms, this means that data generated by Indian citizens must, in many cases, be stored on servers located within India. This has made the construction of domestic data centres not just a business opportunity, but a legal and operational necessity for any company operating in the country.
