The patent also mentions using the adjustable suspension to lower the steering wheels deeper into the water to act like rudders.
An Evolution of Off-Road Dominance
While the patent doesn't name a specific model, it's impossible not to think of the iconic G-Class. Known for its supreme off-road capability, the G-Class has long been the benchmark for rugged luxury. The latest electric version, the G 580 with EQ Technology, already boasts an impressive water fording depth and features four individually controlled electric motors. This existing architecture, which allows for precise torque vectoring and maneuvers like the 'G-TURN', aligns perfectly with the patent's description of using individual wheel motors for aquatic control. This new amphibious capability feels less like a gimmick and more like a logical, if extreme, extension of the G-Class's 'go-anywhere' ethos. It's a statement that even as the legendary off-roader goes electric, its adventurous spirit will not be diminished.
Beyond the Boat Ramp
While the image of a G-Wagen cruising across a lake is compelling, the practical applications could extend beyond recreational use. This technology could be invaluable for first responders in flood-prone areas, for explorers in regions with undeveloped infrastructure, or for anyone who operates in extreme environments where rivers and bodies of water are obstacles. Other automakers, particularly in China, have demonstrated vehicles with similar amphibious capabilities, suggesting a growing interest in pushing the boundaries of vehicle utility. For Mercedes, it’s a way to reinforce its reputation for engineering prowess and answer competitors with a thoroughly engineered solution. The system is described as a complete 'Water Mode' that manages everything from entering the water, stabilising the vehicle against currents, and efficiently climbing back onto shore.
Patent vs. Production: A Reality Check
It is crucial to remember that a patent filing is not a promise of a production feature. Automakers frequently patent innovative ideas to protect their intellectual property, and many of these concepts never make it to the showroom floor. There are significant hurdles to overcome, including cost, added complexity, weight, and regulatory approval for a vehicle that operates on both land and water. This isn't the first time Mercedes has explored this area; another patent from late 2025 also described a floating vehicle concept. This pattern suggests a consistent line of research and development within the company, but it doesn't guarantee a floating G-Class is coming soon.
