Why Your Aadhaar Address Matters
Your Aadhaar card is more than just a 12-digit number; it's a primary proof of identity and address (PoA) accepted across India. An outdated address can lead to significant hurdles. It's essential for completing Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements for bank
accounts, mutual fund investments, and new mobile connections. Government welfare schemes, subsidies, and official communications are all linked to the address on your Aadhaar. Keeping it current ensures you receive important mail and can seamlessly access a wide range of financial and government services without delays or rejections.
The Online Method: Update from Home
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) offers a convenient online process through its myAadhaar portal. To use this service, your mobile number must be registered with your Aadhaar, as you'll need it to receive a One-Time Password (OTP) for login. Once logged in, navigate to the 'Address Update' section. You'll be prompted to enter your new address details and upload a scanned, self-attested copy of a valid proof of address document. After entering the information, you can preview the changes before submitting. A fee of ₹75 is applicable for this service. Upon payment, a Service Request Number (SRN) is generated, which you can use to track the status of your application online.
Acceptable Proof of Address Documents
UIDAI accepts a wide variety of documents as valid Proof of Address (PoA). It's crucial to ensure the document you upload is in your name and clearly shows the new address. Some of the most commonly used documents include: a Passport, bank statement or passbook, Post Office account statement, ration card, and Voter ID card. You can also use recent utility bills (not older than three months) such as electricity, water, or a landline telephone bill. A registered sale deed, property tax receipt (not older than one year), or a valid rental agreement are also acceptable. A full list is available on the official UIDAI website.
No Proof? Use the Head of Family (HoF) Option
For those who lack a valid address proof document in their own name, such as students or individuals who have recently moved in with family, UIDAI provides the Head of Family (HoF) based update facility. This allows you to update your address using the Aadhaar of a relative (like a parent, spouse, or other family head) who resides at the same address and is willing to give their consent. The process is initiated online through the myAadhaar portal, where you enter the HOF's Aadhaar number. The HOF must then approve the request by logging into their own myAadhaar account within 30 days. You'll need to upload a Proof of Relationship document, such as a marriage certificate or ration card, that shows your name and the HOF's name.
The Offline Method: Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra
If you are not comfortable with the online process or if your mobile number is not linked to your Aadhaar, you can update your address by visiting a permanent Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or an Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK). You can book an appointment online to save time, though many centres also accept walk-ins. At the centre, you will need to fill out an Aadhaar update form, providing your new address details. You must also bring the original copy of your proof of address document, which will be scanned by the operator. A biometric verification (fingerprint or iris scan) is required to authenticate the request. The fee for this service is ₹75, after which you will be given an acknowledgement slip with an Update Request Number (URN) to track your application status.
Checking Your Update Status and Getting Your New Card
Whether you apply online or offline, you can track the progress of your request on the UIDAI website using the SRN or URN provided. Most online requests are processed within 30 days, while offline updates may take a bit longer. Once your request is approved and the address is updated in UIDAI's records, you can download an e-Aadhaar, which is a password-protected electronic copy of your updated card. UIDAI does not automatically send a new physical card after an address update, but you can use the downloaded e-Aadhaar as your official proof of address or order a new PVC Aadhaar card for a nominal fee.
