The King's Trail (Kungsleden)
Often called the king of all hiking trails, the Kungsleden is Sweden's most famous long-distance path, stretching approximately 440 kilometres through the heart of Swedish Lapland. Located mostly above the Arctic Circle, this trail offers an unparalleled
immersion into a landscape of vast tundra, towering mountain peaks, and crystal-clear rivers. The route is divided into several sections, with the most popular being the 105-kilometre stretch between Abisko and Nikkaluokta. Depending on the season, hikers can experience the midnight sun or the ethereal glow of the Northern Lights. The path is well-marked and dotted with mountain cabins managed by the Swedish Tourist Association, making it accessible even for those new to multi-day trekking. Whether you tackle a small section or the entire length, the Kungsleden delivers a profound sense of solitude and wild beauty.
The High Coast Trail (Höga Kustenleden)
For a hike that combines dramatic coastal scenery with unique geological wonders, look no further than the High Coast Trail. This 135-kilometre route traverses a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a landscape defined by a phenomenon called post-glacial rebound, where the land is literally rising from the sea. The trail runs from Hornöberget in the south to Örnsköldsvik in the north, offering a mix of deep forests, rocky shores, and high cliffs that provide stunning views over the Baltic Sea. In fact, nowhere else in Sweden can you hike at such altitudes so close to the coast. The trail is broken into nine distinct sections of varying difficulty, passing through Skuleskogen National Park and offering experiences from sandy beaches to high mountain plateaus. It’s a journey through a living landscape that’s still being shaped by ancient forces.
The Skåneleden Trail
Located in Sweden’s southernmost region, the Skåneleden Trail offers a completely different but equally enchanting hiking experience. This extensive network of over 1,600 kilometres is divided into six sub-trails and 113 sections, winding through a diverse and gentle landscape. Here, you can wander through lush beech forests, across rolling fields, and along picturesque coastlines with dramatic cliffs and sandy beaches. Its accessibility is a major draw; many sections are easily reached by public transport, making it perfect for day trips or shorter weekend hikes. The trail caters to all levels, from casual walkers to serious hikers, blending natural beauty with cultural sights like charming villages and historic estates. One of the most popular sections, the Kullaleden, is known for its rugged coastal scenery within the Kullaberg Nature Reserve.
The Sörmlandsleden Trail
Stretching for over 1,000 kilometres, the Sörmlandsleden is one of Sweden's longest and most accessible trail systems, with many starting points just a short trip from Stockholm. This makes it an ideal escape for those looking to swap city life for the tranquility of nature without venturing too far. The trail meanders through the historic province of Södermanland, offering a rich tapestry of deep forests, countless serene lakes, and areas of cultural significance. Because it's divided into over 100 sections, hikers can choose their own adventure, whether it's a short, easy walk or a more demanding multi-day trek. The path is well-marked with orange rings on trees and offers a variety of shelters, from simple lean-tos to rentable cabins, making it a flexible and rewarding option for experiencing the Swedish countryside.
