Now, AI allows criminals to launch widespread campaigns where every single message is tailored to its recipient. An AI can scrape a person's LinkedIn profile to understand their job, their colleagues, and recent projects, then craft a phishing email that seems to come from their manager referencing a specific deal. This elevates the click-through rate of phishing emails dramatically. What used to take a human researcher 16 hours can now be done by AI in five minutes, representing a monumental leap in efficiency for criminals. This combination of quality and quantity means more people are being targeted with more effective scams than ever before.
The Rise of Deepfake Deception
Beyond voice and text, AI is also being used to create 'deepfakes'—synthetic videos that can show someone saying or doing something they never did. While creating a real-time deepfake video call is still complex, criminals are using AI-generated images and video clips to add legitimacy to their scams. This could be a fake video of a celebrity endorsing a fraudulent cryptocurrency investment or a manufactured news clip that appears to validate a scammer's claims. Some attackers have even used deepfake video in conference calls to impersonate executives and authorize fraudulent multi-million dollar transactions. As the technology improves, the ability to trust what we see and hear online will be further eroded, making verification more critical than ever.

While the threat is sophisticated, the best defences are rooted in simple, consistent habits. First, always verify urgent requests for money or sensitive information. If you get a panicked call from a loved one, hang up and call them back on their known, trusted phone number. Second, be sceptical of unsolicited messages, even if they seem personally relevant. Look for pressure tactics that try to rush you into a decision. Third, enhance your digital privacy. Limiting the amount of personal information, video, and audio you share publicly can make it harder for scammers to gather the data needed to target you.
