A New Splash of Colour at 10,600 Feet
Ladakh's dramatic terrain has a new, unexpected feature: two sprawling flower fields that have been dubbed the world's highest-altitude twin gardens. Located at Choglamsar and Stakna near Leh, these gardens cover a combined 40 acres and sit at a breathtaking
10,600 feet. In a region known for its earth tones and piercing blue skies, these fields introduce a stunning contrast with over 2.5 million flowers. The project, inaugurated in September 2026, transforms the landscape with vast carpets of colour, featuring more than 2.4 million Liliums and around 100,000 Gladiolus in brilliant shades of yellow, white, orange, and red. This ambitious initiative offers visitors a completely new visual experience against the iconic backdrop of the Himalayas.
An Extended Autumn Bloom
While Ladakh is famous for its spring apricot blossoms, these new gardens create an entirely separate and later blooming season. The project has been cleverly designed with staggered planting schedules to extend the floral display. The garden at Choglamsar, planted in July, began to showcase its vibrant colours in early September. Meanwhile, the field at Stakna was planted in August, with its blooms expected to appear towards the end of October. This thoughtful planning means that visitors have a longer window, from late summer into autumn, to witness this spectacle. It offers a new reason to visit Ladakh outside the peak summer months, providing two distinct floral scenes depending on whether one arrives in September or October.
More Than Just a Pretty View
These gardens are much more than a tourist attraction. They represent a significant initiative by the Ladakh administration to diversify the local economy and create new opportunities for its residents. The primary goal is to promote floriculture as a high-value agricultural activity that can supplement traditional farming and boost incomes. The Choglamsar flower park is also intended to function as a training, demonstration, and model centre for local farmers and youth. It provides exposure to modern cultivation techniques and scientific farming practices, with the aim of creating a sustainable ecosystem for growing and marketing high-value flowers. The project is a forward-thinking blend of beautification, tourism, and economic empowerment.
Planning Your Floral Tour
Visiting these new floral wonders is a convenient addition to any Ladakh itinerary. Both Choglamsar and Stakna are located a short drive from Leh's main town, easily reachable by local taxi or rented scooter in about 20 to 30 minutes. The gardens officially opened to the public on September 18, 2026. To ensure their upkeep, a nominal entry fee has been set at ₹25 for adults and ₹10 for children, with the revenue generated dedicated to the maintenance of the fields. For photographers and nature lovers, the gardens offer a unique opportunity to capture the delicate beauty of millions of flowers set against the grand, rugged canvas of the Ladakhi mountains.
