The Old Scramble for Tickets
For years, securing a Tatkal ticket at a physical Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter has been a test of endurance. Passengers often lined up hours before the counters opened, sometimes even overnight, just to have a chance at a confirmed seat.
This process was not only inconvenient but also created opportunities for disputes and the involvement of touts, making it a stressful experience for genuine travellers. The high demand and limited availability of Tatkal seats frequently led to overcrowding and chaos at railway stations across the country.
How the New Token System Works
The new system, which is being introduced in selected railway zones starting from August 1, 2026, replaces the physical queue with a numbered token. Instead of waiting for hours, passengers can now visit the counter during a specific, short window before the Tatkal booking opens to collect a token. This token holds their place in a virtual queue. Passengers are then called to the booking window according to their token number when the actual Tatkal booking period begins. The initiative is designed exclusively for offline bookings at PRS counters and does not affect the online booking process through the IRCTC website or app.
Your Arrival Is Now Tied to a Number
The core of this new system is that your arrival time at the counter is no longer determined by how early you show up to stand in line. It's tied to your token number being announced or displayed. After collecting a token, passengers can leave the immediate counter area and only need to return when their number is called. This transforms the experience from a long, static wait into a scheduled appointment. It aims to make the process more efficient, transparent, and orderly, significantly reducing the time spent physically waiting at the station.
A Step-by-Step Guide for Passengers
To use the new system, you first need to check the token distribution timings. For AC class Tatkal tickets, tokens are typically issued between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. For non-AC classes like Sleeper, the window is from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. The actual ticket booking still commences at the standard times of 10:00 AM for AC and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes. After collecting your token, listen for announcements or check the display boards for your number. When your turn comes, proceed to the counter with a valid government-issued photo ID and completed reservation form to book your ticket.
Token Limits and Priority for Families
Initially, each counter is expected to issue a limited number of tokens—for instance, 10 for AC class and 15 for non-AC. This number can be adjusted based on demand at the station. The system also introduces two categories. Category A gives priority to passengers booking tickets for family members, requiring ID proof for both the person at the counter and the travelling family member. Category B is for all other bookings. These tokens are strictly non-transferable. If seats remain after all token holders have been served, they will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to walk-in passengers.
