What Is the New Token System?
Starting August 1, 2026, at selected railway zones, Indian Railways has rolled out a token-based system for all offline Tatkal bookings. Instead of joining a physical queue immediately, passengers must first collect a numbered token. This token dictates your position in the queue, meaning your turn at the counter is determined by your token number, not how long you've been standing there. The goal is to make the booking process more organised, transparent, and less chaotic. It's important to note this change only affects bookings made at physical counters; the process for booking Tatkal tickets online via the IRCTC website or app remains unchanged.
How It Works: Your New Game Plan
The new process fundamentally changes when you need to be at the station. Your focus is no longer on arriving at 4 AM, but on being present during a specific, short window to collect a token. The distribution is time-sensitive and class-dependent. For AC Class Tatkal tickets, tokens are distributed from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM. For Non-AC classes (like Sleeper), the window is 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. The actual ticket booking still commences at the usual times: 10:00 AM for AC class and 11:00 AM for Non-AC class. After collecting your token, you can wait for your number to be called instead of standing in a continuous queue, completing the entire process in a single, more organised visit.
Why Arrival Time Needs a Rethink
The headline's advice to "review arrival time" is critical. Arriving hours early is now pointless. If you arrive before the token distribution window opens, you'll just be waiting. If you arrive after it closes, you won't get a token and will miss your chance entirely for the initial booking rush. The strategy shifts from a marathon of waiting to a sprint of timing. Your entire chance of getting a ticket now hinges on being present within that specific 30-minute token distribution slot. While this eliminates the need to camp overnight, it places immense pressure on arriving at precisely the right moment. Initially, each counter is expected to issue a limited number of tokens—around 10 for AC and 15 for Non-AC—though this may be adjusted based on demand.
A Fairer System with Family Priority
One of the system's key features is its aim to ensure a more equitable process. To curb touts, tokens are non-transferable. Furthermore, Indian Railways has introduced two categories to prioritise genuine travellers. 'Category A' tokens are for passengers booking for themselves or their family members, and these are given precedence. 'Category B' is for all other bookings. To get a Category A token, you must present your own valid photo ID and that of the family member you are booking for. This prioritises families and individuals over agents or third parties. After all token holders have booked, any remaining Tatkal tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis to those without tokens.
