A Landmark Partnership for Wildlife Tourism
In a significant move to boost wildlife tourism, the Maharashtra Forest Department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). The agreement, announced on International Tiger Day 2026,
introduces a new initiative called 'VANDARSHAN'. This collaboration aims to provide a seamless, all-in-one booking experience for tourists wanting to explore the state's rich biodiversity. Historically, planning a safari involved a complicated process of booking travel, accommodation, and the notoriously hard-to-get safari permits separately. This new venture collapses all these steps into a single transaction, making the wilderness more accessible than ever before.
Which Wildlife Hotspots are Covered?
The initial phase of this partnership covers six key protected areas in Maharashtra, offering a fantastic cross-section of the state's tiger country. The destinations include four major Tiger Reserves: Tadoba-Andhari, Pench, Navegaon-Nagzira, and Bor. In addition to these, the packages also provide access to two notable wildlife sanctuaries: Umred-Karhandla and Tipeshwar. This selection offers a diverse range of experiences, from the world-renowned tiger density of Tadoba to the emerging wilderness of Tipeshwar. Notably, two of Maharashtra's six designated tiger reserves, Melghat and Sahyadri, are not included in the initial launch of the program.
What's Included in the All-Inclusive Packages?
The core appeal of the VANDARSHAN packages is their comprehensive nature. A single booking bundles together all the essential components of a wildlife tour. This includes confirmed train tickets for travel, typically departing from Mumbai CSMT on the Vidarbha Express. Also covered are local transfers from the railway station to the designated resort or hotel, accommodation for the duration of the trip, and, most crucially, assured safari permits for jungle excursions. IRCTC is rolling out five distinct curated itineraries, each designed as a four-night, five-day trip catering to different interests, such as families, photographers, and first-time safari-goers.
The Game-Changer: Guaranteed Safari Permits
For any seasoned wildlife enthusiast, the most significant feature of this partnership is the guarantee of safari permits. Booking safari permits online, especially for popular parks like Tadoba, is an intensely competitive process, with slots often selling out within minutes of becoming available 120 days in advance. This uncertainty has long been the biggest barrier for aspiring visitors. By securing a bulk quota of permits from the Forest Department, IRCTC eliminates this friction entirely. This not only provides convenience but also adds tangible value, as it assures access to an experience that money alone often couldn't guarantee.
Booking Your Trip and Promoting Conservation
The packages are designed to be booked directly through the IRCTC Tourism portal, streamlining the entire process for the traveller. While detailed pricing for each package has not been fully publicised, the model simplifies budgeting for a trip significantly. Beyond convenience, officials have framed the initiative as a step towards promoting responsible and sustainable tourism. By organising the flow of tourists, the partnership aims to better manage visitor pressure on the parks, support local economies, and generate livelihoods for communities living around these protected areas. The initiative seeks to not only open up the jungles to more people but also to strengthen awareness and support for wildlife conservation efforts across Maharashtra.
