or lost due to the technology. Between 2022 and August 2026, India recorded approximately 83,100 new AI-related jobs against 31,921 layoffs linked to automation, making it a key region for understanding AI's employment effects. This surge is not just a footnote; it positions India as the single largest contributor to AI-driven hiring in Asia. The demand is robust, with recruitment firms like Michael Page noting that while global hiring has normalised, India remains a bright spot, partly driven by AI-related workforce shifts.
Growth Area 1: Core AI and ML Engineering
The most direct growth is in foundational technical roles. According to LinkedIn's CEO, hiring for AI engineering roles in India is growing by a staggering 51% year-on-year. These are the architects of the AI revolution—the professionals who build, train, and deploy machine learning models. The demand is for individuals with deep expertise in programming languages like Python, and familiarity with frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch. NASSCOM predicts that India will need a million AI-skilled professionals by 2026, but a significant skills gap remains, with some estimates suggesting only a small fraction of the current IT workforce is adequately trained. This indicates a massive opportunity for those willing to build deep technical capabilities in machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and computer vision.
