The primary driver behind this surge in information technology spending is the global race to build out infrastructure for Artificial Intelligence. According to Gartner, building the compute capacity required for AI is being viewed as "the largest infrastructure project
ever attempted by humanity". This isn't just about companies buying new software; it's a fundamental re-architecting of the digital world. Enterprises and hyperscale cloud providers are pouring unprecedented sums into AI-optimised servers, cloud platforms, and intelligent applications to support intensive AI workloads. This AI-centric investment boom is reshaping market priorities, with spending increasingly concentrated in segments that directly support the adoption and scaling of artificial intelligence capabilities across every sector of the economy.
Where Exactly Is the Money Going?
A closer look at Gartner's forecast reveals a multi-speed market, where some areas are growing at a blistering pace while others see more modest gains. The standout performer is Data Center Systems, projected to soar by an incredible 62.5% to reach $822 billion in 2026. This reflects the physical build-out of server capacity needed for AI. Following closely in terms of growth rate is Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), which is set to jump by 29.3% to $287 billion as companies rent cloud capacity to run their AI models. Software spending also remains robust, with a forecast of 15.5% growth to $1.47 trillion. In contrast, more traditional segments like IT Services and Communications Services are predicted to grow at a slower, albeit still significant, rate of 5.3% and 4.4% respectively. Device spending is expected to grow by a healthy 9.8%, but the story is clearly about the infrastructure and software powering the AI revolution.
It's Not a Free-for-All
While the headline number is enormous, Gartner analyst John-David Lovelock cautions that this is not a "rising tide lifts all boats" scenario. Technology budgets are being pulled in multiple directions. They are strained by persistent inflation, ongoing supply shortages for components like high-performance memory, and the rising costs of hardware. Companies are facing difficult choices, having to balance ambitious AI funding initiatives with other shifting business priorities. The forecast makes it clear that the incremental spending is overwhelmingly directed toward AI-related projects, sometimes at the expense of more traditional IT budget items. This creates a challenging environment for CIOs who must strategically allocate resources to stay competitive without overstretching their budgets.
The Opportunity for India
This global spending boom presents a massive opportunity for India's technology sector. While the latest global forecast was released in July 2026, earlier Gartner reports from late 2025 projected India's own IT spending to exceed $176 billion in 2026. The key global growth drivers—data centers and software—are areas where India has significant strengths. The worldwide demand for AI-ready infrastructure and software development directly plays into the hands of India's vast IT services and consulting industry. As global enterprises accelerate their digital and AI transformation, they will lean heavily on implementation partners. This surge will likely fuel continued growth for Global Capability Centers (GCCs) in India and create sustained demand for the nation's highly skilled tech workforce. Furthermore, the focus on building new data centers globally, driven by AI and data sovereignty needs, will also spur significant investment in local infrastructure within India.
