A Legacy of French Ingenuity
This partnership is a natural fit, uniting two brands born from a shared ambition to merge performance with elegance. On one side is Alpine, the legendary sports car manufacturer with a rich heritage in rally and circuit racing. On the other is Lacoste,
the fashion house founded by tennis champion René Lacoste, a brand synonymous with sporting elegance and the iconic crocodile logo. Both founders, Jean Rédélé of Alpine and René Lacoste, were passionate inventors who believed that form should follow function, and that elegance should always be in motion. This collaboration celebrates that shared ethos, bringing together the worlds of the circuit and the court.
Beware of the Crocodile
The centerpiece of this collaboration is a striking one-off concept car: the “Beware of the Crocodile” Alpine Lacoste A290 Rallye. Based on the electric A290 Rallye customer competition car, this vehicle is a dramatic reinterpretation of rally design through a fashion lens. The exterior is finished in a bluish-white inspired by Alpine landscapes, evoking snow and ice. This cool palette is dramatically contrasted by the interior, which is enveloped in a vivid monochrome red, designed to make the driver feel as though they are stepping inside the crocodile's mouth. The red is a direct nod to the tongue of Lacoste's iconic logo, a detail that serves as a central theme throughout the project.
From Rally Car to Wardrobe
Beyond the show car, the collaboration extends to a capsule collection of apparel and accessories. The line includes boldly branded polo shirts, T-shirts, and sophisticated technical pieces that blend functionality with style. The design language marries Alpine's motorsport aesthetic—clean lines, color blocking, and performance trims—with Lacoste's classic tennis DNA. A standout detail is the use of Lacoste's signature petit piquet fabric on the seats and door panels of the A290 Rallye, with embroidery done by the same historic workshop that produces the crocodiles for the brand's famous polo shirts. This textural detail creates a surprising and sophisticated link between the car and the clothing.
The Rise of Motorsport Chic
The Alpine and Lacoste partnership arrives at a time when motorsport's influence on fashion is stronger than ever. The aesthetic, often dubbed 'motorcore' or 'high-speed style', has moved from a niche interest to a mainstream trend, with racing jackets, bold logos, and utilitarian silhouettes appearing on runways and in streetwear. Brands from Tommy Hilfiger to Louis Vuitton have embraced the adrenaline and glamour of the racing world. This collaboration, however, feels less like a trend-driven marketing exercise and more like an authentic meeting of minds. It's a celebration of precision, performance, and a shared French vision of style.
