A Nationwide Hiring Spree
India's festive job market is experiencing robust growth in 2026, with estimates suggesting the creation of over 250,000 temporary and gig roles. This surge in hiring reflects a 15-20% increase compared to the previous year, highlighting the growing economic
significance of the festive period that stretches from Independence Day through Diwali and the year-end holidays. While the overall white-collar job market has seen a slowdown, festive hiring grew by 7% year-on-year, demonstrating the resilience of consumer-facing sectors. Companies are preparing for a massive spike in demand, and this preparation now starts earlier than ever, with many beginning their workforce planning 12 to 14 weeks in advance.
E-Commerce and Quick Commerce Lead the Charge
The primary drivers of this employment boom are the e-commerce and quick commerce sectors. Quick commerce has seen the fastest growth, with an 18% year-on-year increase in festive hiring, followed by e-commerce at 12%. Major players are scaling up their operations significantly. For instance, Flipkart has announced plans for over 250,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, while Amazon is creating more than 160,000 seasonal roles. Myntra is more than doubling its temporary workforce from last year, adding over 26,000 positions. This surge is a direct response to anticipated record-breaking sales, as more Indians turn to online platforms for their festive shopping.
The Crucial Role of Logistics and Supply Chain
An army of e-commerce workers would be stranded without a robust supply chain. The logistics and transportation sector has seen a corresponding 10% jump in festive hiring. The demand for roles in logistics is expected to rise by as much as 30-35%. The most in-demand positions are in operations and fulfilment, which account for 23% of festive jobs, followed by sales, customer service, and supply chain roles. These jobs include warehouse pickers, packers, dark-store personnel, and last-mile delivery executives, who form the backbone of the entire festive sales ecosystem. Companies are also seeking workers for more specialized roles like inventory coordinators and returns management executives, reflecting the growing complexity of retail supply chains.
Growth Beyond the Metros
One of the most significant trends this year is the geographical distribution of these new jobs. While metropolitan hubs like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Chennai remain important, the fastest growth is happening elsewhere. Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are seeing a surge in hiring, with growth rates of 11% and 15% respectively, compared to just 3% in major metros. These smaller cities are expected to contribute around 45% of the total festive hiring demand. This shift is driven by the expansion of e-commerce and organised retail into new markets, bringing employment opportunities to cities like Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore, and Coimbatore.
More Than Just a Temporary Gig?
Traditionally, festive jobs have been temporary arrangements. However, a notable shift is underway. Employers are increasingly viewing this seasonal hiring period as an opportunity to build a talent pipeline. According to one survey, 74% of employers expect to retain at least 10% of their 2026 festive hires through contract extensions or conversion to longer-term roles. This trend aligns with the preferences of job seekers, many of whom prioritize the possibility of continued employment over slightly higher pay for a short-term role. These opportunities are particularly beneficial for early-career professionals with 0-3 years of experience, who make up the largest share of the festive workforce.
