A Royal Makeover for a New Era
The Palace on Wheels has long been celebrated for recreating the opulence of the carriages once used by the Maharajas and Nizams of India. Recent renovations have elevated this experience further. The train's interiors have been thoughtfully redesigned,
with themes inspired by Rajasthan's various royal houses. One of the dining cars, for example, is now modelled after the dazzling Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) in Amber Fort. While the iconic exterior remains, the cabins and common areas feature contemporary furnishings, new artwork, and upgraded amenities, ensuring the journey is as comfortable as it is grand. Onboard facilities include two fine-dining restaurants ('Maharaja' and 'Maharani'), a bar and lounge, and even an Ayurvedic spa to help you unwind as the desert landscape rolls by.
The Timeless Journey Through India's Heartland
The train follows a classic eight-day, seven-night circuit that begins and ends at New Delhi's Safdarjung Station. This curated itinerary is designed for 'Night-Travel, Day-Discovery,' meaning you travel between cities while you sleep and wake up to a new destination each morning. The route covers the heart of Rajasthan and beyond, including stops in Jaipur (the Pink City), Sawai Madhopur for a safari in Ranthambore National Park, the fortress of Chittorgarh, the lake city of Udaipur, the golden sands of Jaisalmer, and the blue city of Jodhpur. The journey culminates with visits to the Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur and, finally, the magnificent Taj Mahal in Agra before returning to Delhi.
Tip 1: Book Well in Advance, Especially for Peak Season
The Palace on Wheels is incredibly popular, with a limited capacity of just 82 passengers per journey. The primary season runs from September to April. The peak months, offering the most pleasant weather, are from October to March. Due to high demand, especially for departures around Christmas and New Year, it is highly recommended to book your tickets six to nine months in advance to secure your preferred dates and cabin type. The lean season months of September and April often have better availability and slightly lower fares.
Tip 2: Understand What's Included in Your Fare
The journey is largely all-inclusive, which simplifies budgeting. The fare covers your accommodation, all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), and guided sightseeing excursions at every stop. This includes entrance fees to monuments and parks, a camel ride in Jaisalmer, a boat ride in Udaipur, and a jeep safari in Ranthambore National Park. However, it's important to note what is not included: alcoholic beverages, laundry service, spa treatments, and tips for the staff and guides are extra expenses you should plan for.
Tip 3: Pack for Both Comfort and Elegance
Your packing list should be versatile. For the daily excursions, comfortable walking shoes are a must, as you will be exploring grand forts, palaces, and bustling markets. Lightweight clothing is suitable for daytime, but if you are travelling in the winter months (December-January), be sure to pack warm layers, as evenings in the desert can be chilly. For evenings on the train, many guests choose to dress up for dinner in the ornate restaurant cars. While not strictly formal, smart-casual or elegant attire is appropriate to match the luxurious atmosphere.
Tip 4: Choose the Right Cabin for Your Needs
The train offers several tiers of accommodation. The most common are the Deluxe Cabins, which are beautifully appointed with twin beds and an en-suite bathroom. For those seeking more space, the Super Deluxe Suites offer a larger layout with a separate seating area. Each carriage, named after a former princely state of Rajasthan, has a dedicated attendant, or 'khidmatgar,' to assist with your needs. When booking, consider your preference for space and budget to select the cabin that best suits your travel style.
