Inspired by Complex Watches
The name 'Grandi Complicazioni' is a direct homage to the world of high-end watchmaking. In horology, a 'grande complication' refers to a watch with multiple complex features beyond simple timekeeping. Pagani applies this philosophy to cars, creating
highly intricate and unique vehicles for a select few. This division, formerly known as Special Projects, focuses on creating one-off and 'few-off' vehicles that push the boundaries of customization. It’s Pagani’s equivalent to other ultra-luxury bespoke services, like Rolls-Royce Bespoke or Lamborghini's Ad Personam program, but with a unique focus on profound engineering changes, not just aesthetic tweaks.
More Than a Restoration
While Pagani does offer a dedicated restoration program called 'Rinascimento' to bring older cars back to their original splendor, Grandi Complicazioni goes much further. This isn't about simply refurbishing an old car; it's about using an existing Huayra as a canvas to create an entirely new, bespoke masterpiece. The process is a deep, collaborative journey with the client, often taking years from concept to completion. A client approaches the division with a dream, and together with Horacio Pagani and his team, they co-create a unique car. This involves not just new body panels and interior finishes, but often significant engineering developments.
Reimagining the Huayra
Recent creations from the Grandi Complicazioni division showcase the incredible possibilities. The Huayra Codalunga, for example, was born from a client's request in 2018 for a long-tail version inspired by 1960s Le Mans racers. The result was a limited run of five cars, each starting at €7 million, featuring a completely new, elongated rear bodywork and an uprated 840 HP V12 engine. More recently, the one-off Huayra Epitome incorporated technology from Pagani's newest model, the Utopia, including its powerful engine and, for the first time in a Huayra, a seven-speed manual transmission. Another recent project, the Huayra 70 Derecho, was built to celebrate founder Horacio Pagani's 70th birthday and also features the powerful V12 and manual gearbox combination.
A Strategy of Ultimate Exclusivity
For a low-volume manufacturer like Pagani, which produces maybe 50 cars a year, the Grandi Complicazioni division is a brilliant business strategy. It allows the company to cater to its most loyal and wealthy clients, who desire something truly unique that no one else can have. These projects generate immense buzz and reinforce the brand's reputation for artistry and engineering prowess. By allowing clients to update and evolve their cars with the latest technology, Pagani turns a one-time purchase into a continuous relationship. This ensures that even as new models like the Utopia are released, the existing Huayra platform remains relevant, desirable, and capable of being reborn into something entirely new.
