The Classic Pencil Bun
This is the quintessential pencil updo, perfect for quickly securing long hair. Start by gathering your hair into a ponytail at the desired height—no elastic needed. Twist the ponytail tightly from the base all the way to the ends. The tighter you twist,
the more secure the bun will be. Now, coil the twisted hair around its base, forming a neat bun. Hold the bun in place with one hand and take your pencil with the other. To secure it, push the pencil through the top edge of the bun, aiming downwards and inwards so it catches the hair against your scalp, then push it out through the bottom edge. The key is to weave it through, catching both the bun and the base hair to anchor it firmly.
The Elegant French Twist
For a more sophisticated and polished look, the French twist is an excellent choice. Begin by gathering your hair at the nape of your neck as if making a low ponytail. Start twisting the hair upwards, tucking the ends in as you go, creating a vertical roll against the back of your head. Once you have a tight twist, hold it in place. Take the pencil and insert it vertically on one side of the twist, catching the hair inside the roll. Push the pencil downwards along your scalp, parallel to the twist, until it feels secure. For extra stability, you can angle the pencil slightly, hooking it into the base of the twist before pushing it down. This style is surprisingly sturdy and works beautifully for office settings or impromptu evenings out.
The Effortless Half-Up Knot
When you want your hair out of your face but still prefer to have some of it down, the half-up knot is the perfect compromise. Section off the top half of your hair, from your temples to the crown of your head. Gather this section and twist it into a small, tight bun. Just like the classic bun, hold it in place and use the pencil to secure it. Weave the pencil through the base of the mini-bun, making sure to catch the underlying hair to anchor it. This style is quick, keeps pesky flyaways at bay, and adds a touch of bohemian chic to your look. It works especially well for those with layered or medium-length hair.
The Secure Braided Bun
If you find that regular pencil buns tend to slip, especially if you have silky hair, a braided bun offers superior hold. First, gather your hair into a low or mid-height ponytail. Braid the entire length of the ponytail and secure the end if needed (though often it's not necessary). Next, coil the braid around its base to form a bun. Because the braid provides more texture and friction, the bun will already feel more stable. Finally, insert the pencil through the bun, using the same weaving technique as the classic bun to lock it in place against your scalp. This variation is great for active days when you need a style that will last for hours.
The Inverted Pencil Tuck
This technique looks intricate but is surprisingly simple once you master the flip. Gather your hair into a low ponytail. Place the pencil horizontally just below the base of your ponytail. Wrap your hair up and over the pencil once or twice, depending on your hair's length. Now, rotate the pencil upwards, flipping it 180 degrees so the point is facing the ceiling. As you rotate, the hair will coil into a tight twist. To finish, push the point of the pencil down against your scalp, sliding it through the base of the twist until it's hidden and the bun feels locked in. Be careful not to poke your neck. This creates a very tidy and compact bun that holds exceptionally well.
