The High Cost of Foreign Roots
India's commercial strawberry cultivation has long depended on imported planting materials, primarily from the United States, Italy, and Spain. Farmers, particularly in the Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani belt which produces over 85% of the nation's crop, have
traditionally used popular Californian varieties like Chandler. This reliance comes with significant drawbacks. Each year, growers have to import young plants, or 'runners', which is a costly affair involving import fees, currency fluctuations, and potential shipping delays. One farmer reported spending around ₹2.5 lakh per acre just on planting material that needs to be replaced annually. Furthermore, these varieties are bred for temperate climates and often struggle to adapt perfectly to India's diverse and sometimes harsh weather patterns, making them vulnerable to heavy rains and pests.
A Strategic 'Make in India' Pivot
In response to these challenges, a concerted push is emerging to develop indigenous strawberry varieties better suited to local conditions. This move is seen as a crucial step towards agricultural self-sufficiency, aligning with a broader national narrative. By creating cultivars designed for India's varied agro-climatic zones, researchers and agricultural bodies aim to create plants that are more resilient to local heat, humidity, and diseases. This initiative involves significant scientific effort. For instance, the Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth has partnered with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre to use low-dose gamma irradiation in breeding experiments, hoping to produce India's first climate-resilient strawberry. The goal is to reduce import dependency, lower costs for farmers, and potentially transform India into a 'strawberry superpower'.
The Promise of Homegrown Berries
While a nationally acclaimed indigenous variety is still in development, the focus is on promoting locally adapted and heat-tolerant cultivars. Strawberry cultivation is already expanding beyond traditional hilly regions into the plains thanks to robust varieties like Winter Dawn, which performs well in subtropical conditions. Other high-performing imported varieties that have shown excellent adaptability to Indian conditions include Sweet Sensation and Florida Felicity, both developed at the University of Florida. These are prized for their high yield, superior flavour, disease resistance, and good shelf life, making them attractive for farmers looking to meet the growing domestic demand. The development of fully indigenous varieties could take this a step further, offering unique flavour profiles and characteristics tailored specifically for the Indian palate and climate.
Benefits for Farmers and Consumers
The shift towards indigenous and better-adapted varieties holds significant benefits for the entire supply chain. For farmers, the most immediate advantage is a reduction in production costs by eliminating the need for expensive imported runners. Locally developed plants are expected to offer higher and more consistent yields due to better climate resilience, which could make strawberry farming a more stable and profitable venture. For consumers, this transition could lead to more affordable strawberries in the market. Additionally, varieties bred for local conditions may allow for an extended growing season and enable cultivation in new, non-traditional areas, increasing the overall availability and freshness of the fruit across the country.
The Road Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities
Despite the clear advantages, the transition is not without its hurdles. Developing, testing, and commercializing new fruit varieties is a long-term process that can take many years and requires sustained investment in agricultural research and development. There is also the challenge of scaling up nursery infrastructure to produce enough certified, disease-free domestic plants for farmers nationwide. Convincing growers to switch from established, reliable imported varieties to new, untested ones will require robust support and demonstration of their superior performance. However, the ambition is clear, and if successful, this plan could not only secure the future of India's strawberry industry but also serve as a model for agricultural innovation and self-reliance in other high-value crops.
