Sights to Soothe the Soul
The heart of Bhandardara is the serene Arthur Lake, a vast body of water formed by the Wilson Dam. The calm lake perfectly reflects the surrounding hills, creating postcard-worthy vistas, especially during the monsoon when clouds hang low. The Wilson Dam itself, built in 1910, is one of the oldest dams in the country and a significant attraction. During the monsoon, when the dam overflows, it creates the spectacular Umbrella Falls, named for the unique shape the water forms as it cascades down the rocks. Another must-see is Randha Falls, where the Pravara River plunges 170 feet into a gorge, creating a powerful and mesmerizing spectacle, especially from July to September.

At the base of the fort lies the village of Ratanwadi, where you can find the ancient Amruteshwar Temple. The best time to witness Bhandardara's dramatic beauty is during the monsoon (June to September) and the post-monsoon months (October to February). From Mumbai, the drive is about 4-5 hours via the Mumbai-Nashik Expressway (NH-160) towards Igatpuri. From Pune, the journey is also around 4-5 hours, typically via NH60 towards Sangamner and then onwards to Akole. While road conditions are generally good, it's wise to drive cautiously during heavy rains as roads can become slippery. The nearest railway station is Igatpuri, about 45 km away, from where you can hire local taxis to reach Bhandardara. A variety of accommodation options are available, from resorts to local guesthouses and lakeside campsites, allowing visitors to immerse themselves fully in the natural surroundings.
