A Legacy Forged on the Track
The M3 story began in 1986 not as a road car, but as a necessity for the racetrack. The original E30 M3 was a 'homologation special'—a road-legal version of BMW's Group A touring race car. Powered by a high-revving four-cylinder engine, its purpose was singular:
to win. And win it did, becoming one of the most successful touring cars in history. Over the next three decades, the M3 evolved dramatically. The E36 generation introduced a smooth inline-six and a more refined, daily-drivable character. The E46 is often hailed as the peak driver's M3, with its legendary S54 inline-six engine that screamed to 8,000 RPM. Then came the E92, the only M3 generation to feature a roaring, high-revving V8 engine. The most recent F80 and G80 generations introduced twin-turbocharging, bringing immense power and torque while sparking debates among purists. Through every change—from four, to six, to eight cylinders, and back to a turbocharged six—the M3's core identity has remained: a car engineered for the ultimate driving experience.
Enter the Neue Klasse
The 'Neue Klasse' (or 'New Class') is more than just a new model; it's a complete reinvention of what a BMW can be. It is a dedicated, all-electric vehicle architecture that will underpin at least six new models by 2030. This platform is built on three key pillars: a new 800-volt electrical system for dramatically faster charging, new cylindrical battery cells with 20% higher energy density, and a profoundly digital-first approach to the driving experience. At the core of the Neue Klasse is a set of powerful new central computers, or 'super brains'. One of the most important is the 'Heart of Joy,' a control unit developed entirely by BMW that manages all aspects of driving dynamics—from power delivery and torque vectoring to braking and stability control. By centralizing these functions, BMW says the system can react faster and more intelligently than any conventional setup, creating a more natural and engaging feel behind the wheel. It represents a fundamental shift from mechanical engineering to a software-defined driving experience.
An Electric Heart for a Legend
The most significant change for the 2027 M3 will be its powertrain. For the first time, BMW will offer two distinct M3s: one based on the electric Neue Klasse platform, and another that continues with a petrol engine to meet Euro 7 emissions standards. M Division boss Frank van Meel has confirmed there will be no hybrid in between these two extremes. The electric M3, codenamed ZA0, is set to be a technical marvel. It will feature a quad-motor setup, with one electric motor dedicated to each wheel. This allows for unprecedented control over power and torque distribution, enabling a highly rear-biased feel that's true to the M3's character. While final figures are unconfirmed, reports suggest a total system output of anywhere from 700 to over 1,000 horsepower, making it the most powerful production M car ever. This immense power is managed by the 'Heart of Joy' computer, promising to make the electric M3 not just the quickest in a straight line, but also the fastest around a track.
Preserving the M3 Soul
With such a monumental shift to electric power and software-driven dynamics, the biggest question is whether the new car can still feel like an M3. BMW M insists the answer is yes. The development focus for the electric M3 began with vehicle dynamics, not just straight-line speed. Head of BMW M, Frank van Meel, has been clear that the legendary M3 name will continue, regardless of what powers it. The company is even developing systems to simulate gear shifts and engine sounds to give the driver crucial feedback and a sense of connection that can be lost in silent EVs. Furthermore, for those not ready for the electric leap, a separate model with an updated version of the beloved S58 twin-turbo inline-six will also be available. This dual-platform strategy ensures that the M3's heritage isn't just a memory but an active part of its future, offering a bridge between its celebrated past and its electric destiny.
