In South Korea, the heat has become a national crisis. The country recorded its highest temperature in 122 years of observation when the southeastern city of Yangsan hit a staggering 42.5°C. Authorities in Seoul issued the city's first-ever “severe heatwave
warning” as the capital braced for temperatures of 38°C. The human toll has been severe, with at least 16 deaths and over 2,000 people treated for heat-related illnesses since May. Across the sea in Japan, the situation is similarly dire. After experiencing its hottest summer on record in 2025, forecasters warned that 2026 would bring another season of severe heat. In recent weeks, some parts of the country have seen temperatures reach 40°C, a level now designated by meteorological authorities as a “cruelly hot day”. The extreme heat is having tragic consequences, with three lions at a Tokyo zoo dying from suspected heatstroke.
Europe's Summer of Fire and Heat Domes
Europe has been battling relentless heat for much of the summer. The latest event involves a 'heat dome'—a cap of high pressure that traps hot air—settling over Central Europe, pushing temperatures past 40°C from Paris to Budapest. Vienna, Austria, recently broke its all-time temperature record. This follows a pattern seen earlier in the summer, with record-breaking heatwaves scorching Western Europe and fueling devastating wildfires in countries like Greece and France. The prolonged high temperatures have had cascading effects, forcing France to shut down more than 10% of its nuclear power plants because the river water used for cooling became too warm. In England and Wales, the driest July in nearly 200 years has compounded the crisis, highlighting the strain on infrastructure and water resources. Scientists have directly linked these events to human-driven climate change, noting that natural variability plays only a minor role.
North America Under a Heat Dome
A similar weather pattern is baking large portions of the United States and Canada. A massive heat dome is stretching across the continent, affecting millions from the Plains to the Midwest and South. In the Western U.S., a heatwave has gripped states from Arizona to Montana, with cities like Phoenix and Las Vegas seeing temperatures climb to 46°C. Forecasters warn that the combination of extreme heat and high humidity will create life-threatening conditions, with the heat index potentially exceeding 49°C in some areas. This relentless heat is straining power grids, disrupting daily life, and dramatically increasing the risk of wildfires in already dry regions. Washington state declared a state of emergency, and authorities issued a rare “Particularly Dangerous Situation” Red Flag Warning for Eastern Washington due to the extreme fire risk.
A Global Phenomenon with a Common Cause
Seeing these intense, simultaneous heatwaves across multiple continents is no coincidence. Scientists are clear that while individual weather patterns like heat domes are the immediate cause, the underlying driver is a planet supercharged by climate change. The world is currently on track to record an average surface temperature 1.58°C above pre-industrial levels for 2026. This elevated global baseline means that every weather event, from a high-pressure system to a naturally occurring El Niño, starts from a warmer launchpad. The current powerful El Niño is amplifying these effects, pouring even more heat into the atmosphere and warming the oceans to record levels. As a result, heatwaves are becoming more frequent, more intense, and lasting longer than ever before, turning what were once rare events into a perilous new summer reality.
