For years, Global Capability Centres—often known as captives—were seen as the back-office support for multinational corporations, set up in India primarily for cost arbitrage. That script is being rewritten. Today, India hosts over 2,100 GCCs employing
more than 2.3 million professionals. These are no longer just support centres; they have evolved into nerve centres for their parent companies, driving innovation, product development, and global strategy. The conversation has shifted from cost savings to capability. The intellectual property is being created here, patents are being filed here, and products are being shipped from here. This evolution from a delivery engine to a strategic partner has positioned India as a dominant force in the global GCC landscape, responsible for R&D, advanced analytics, and digital transformation.
Why AI is the New Centre of Gravity
Artificial intelligence is the single biggest disruptive force in the business world, reshaping everything from customer experience to supply chain management. For global corporations, building a robust AI capability is no longer optional; it's a matter of survival and competitive advantage. Consequently, their GCCs are now at the forefront of this transformation. More than 1,200 GCCs in India now have embedded AI and machine learning capabilities, with many running dedicated AI Centres of Excellence. The mandate for these centres is clear: don't just use AI, but build and innovate with it. They are tasked with everything from developing generative AI tools for chip design to creating predictive models for healthcare outcomes. This makes the availability of high-quality AI talent the most critical factor for future growth.
India's AI-Native Opportunity
India is uniquely positioned to become the world's epicentre for AI talent. The country already has a vast pool of STEM graduates and the world's second-largest base of enterprise AI talent. However, being 'AI-native' is about more than just numbers; it's about a workforce that thinks, builds, and solves problems with AI as a core competency. Recent reports indicate a strong push in this direction. Nearly 70% of India's early-career tech talent is now considered AI-proficient, and a significant portion is already integrating AI into their daily work. This growing pool of talent, combined with a mature GCC ecosystem, creates a powerful proposition for global firms looking to establish high-value, innovation-led AI hubs. The opportunity is to move beyond being an 'outsourcing hub' and become the 'innovation partner' for the world.
The Challenge: Bridging the Skills Gap
The opportunity is massive, but it is not guaranteed. While India has a large talent pool, a significant gap exists between the demand for and supply of high-end, specialised AI skills. Reports highlight a potential shortfall of over a million skilled AI professionals by 2027 if upskilling isn't accelerated. The highest demand is for professionals with deep expertise in areas like AI deployment, governance, machine learning operations (MLOps), and AI security—roles that go far beyond foundational knowledge. Recognizing this, many GCCs are now aggressively investing in reskilling their existing workforce, transitioning professionals from adjacent tech roles into specialised AI functions. This internal talent creation is becoming as important as external hiring. The challenge lies in scaling these initiatives to meet the explosive demand.
