A New Connection Is Forged
Indian Railways is expanding its popular semi-high-speed network, with multiple Vande Bharat trains already connecting Varanasi to key cities like New Delhi and Patna. One of the most talked-about recent additions is the route linking Howrah (Kolkata)
to Varanasi. This service drastically cuts the journey time compared to conventional trains, which can take anywhere from 11 to 15 hours. The Vande Bharat Express from Howrah aims to cover the distance in under eight hours, making an overnight journey or a quick dash possible without sacrificing an entire day to travel. Another highly anticipated service is a new Vande Bharat Sleeper train proposed between New Delhi and Varanasi, which would offer an overnight journey of approximately eight hours, allowing travellers to arrive fresh in the morning.
The Journey Itself Is an Upgrade
Part of the appeal of the Vande Bharat is the onboard experience, which is a significant leap from traditional train travel. The fully air-conditioned coaches feature ergonomic, reclining seats (with some that rotate in executive class), large windows for panoramic views, and a clean, modern aesthetic. Amenities like on-board Wi-Fi, GPS-based passenger information screens, and charging sockets for every seat ensure a comfortable and connected journey. The self-propelled design of the train allows for faster acceleration and deceleration, contributing to the reduced travel time. Quality on-board catering is also provided, meaning you can board the train and have your meals sorted until you arrive, further simplifying the travel process.
Your 48-Hour Varanasi Itinerary
So, what can you do with the time you save? A weekend in Varanasi is just enough to soak in its essential spirit. Arrive on a Saturday morning and check into a hotel, preferably near the ghats. Your first stop could be a walk along the Dashashwamedh Ghat, followed by a visit to the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple and its recently developed corridor. In the afternoon, you can explore the bustling lanes and perhaps visit the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple. The evening is reserved for the unmissable Ganga Aarti, a mesmerizing spectacle of fire, sound, and devotion. On Sunday morning, take a sunrise boat ride on the Ganges to witness the city's spiritual awakening as pilgrims perform their morning rituals. Afterwards, a half-day trip to Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, is highly recommended. You can explore the Dhamek Stupa and the archaeological museum before heading back to the station for your evening Vande Bharat journey home.
Making the Logistics Work
The key to a successful city break is seamless logistics. The Vande Bharat trains arrive at either Varanasi Junction (Cantt.) or Banaras (Manduadih) station, both of which are well-connected to the main city areas. From there, auto-rickshaws and cabs are readily available to take you to your hotel. For a short trip, staying near the ghats (like Assi Ghat or Dashashwamedh) is ideal, as it puts you within walking distance of major attractions. Booking your Vande Bharat tickets well in advance is crucial, as these services are popular and tend to fill up quickly, especially around weekends and holidays. Using the official IRCTC website or app is the most reliable way to secure your seats. Similarly, pre-booking your accommodation will save you time and hassle upon arrival.
