The Great Indian Squeeze
The primary driver behind this shift is the harsh economic reality facing young Indians. A regular salary, even one that seems decent on paper, is often no match for the country's rising cost of living. In major metropolitan areas, rent can devour up
to half of a young professional's income. Add education loans, transportation, and daily essentials, and there is precious little left for savings or discretionary spending. Recent reports highlight a growing sentiment among Gen Z that their salaries are insufficient for anything beyond the bare necessities. This financial anxiety is not just about a lack of luxury; it's a fear of instability. Many young workers feel that a single job leaves them vulnerable, with one unexpected medical bill or job loss capable of derailing their entire financial future. This has weakened trust in the traditional promise of a secure corporate job.
The Gig Economy's Double Edge
The gig economy initially appeared to be a solution, offering flexibility and autonomy. An estimated 7.7 million Indians were part of it in 2020-21, a number projected to surge to 23.5 million by 2029-30. For many, it provides a crucial lifeline. However, this flexibility comes with a trade-off: a lack of stability, benefits, and predictable income. Many young workers in the gig economy experience income volatility and long hours, which can heighten financial anxiety. Consequently, instead of being a primary career, gig work often becomes one of several components in a larger strategy. Many in Gen Z are now building what experts call “portfolio careers,” where a traditional 9-to-5 job serves as a financial base to fund other ventures, from freelance projects to small businesses. This approach views the main job not as an identity, but as a stepping stone.
AI as the New Side Hustle Toolkit
The game-changer in this new world of work is Artificial Intelligence. AI is no longer a far-off concept; it’s a practical toolkit that Gen Z is skillfully deploying to create and manage their side hustles. A staggering 93% of Gen Z in India reportedly use AI in their daily work. These tools are used for everything from generating content and designing logos to building websites and providing translation services. AI significantly lowers the barrier to entry for entrepreneurship. It automates repetitive tasks, allowing a single person to accomplish what might have previously required a small team. This empowers young professionals to test business ideas, create products, and market their services with unprecedented speed and efficiency. According to recent research, 85% of Gen Z entrepreneurs consider AI and digital tools important to their operations.
It’s About More Than Just Money
While financial necessity is a powerful motivator, the move towards side hustles is also driven by a deep-seated desire for autonomy, creativity, and skill development. Many in Gen Z feel that corporate roles can be restrictive, while a side business allows for experimentation and individuality. There is a growing belief that managing a small venture teaches more practical, real-world skills—like client handling, pricing, and market analysis—than a traditional job can offer. A 2026 survey found that for many, the 9-to-5 pays the bills, but the side hustle “pays the vibes,” offering a sense of purpose and control. This generation prioritizes flexibility and ownership over the traditional markers of success like titles and promotions, viewing a portfolio of income streams as safer than relying on a single employer.
