Understanding Chart Preparation
Before a train departs, Indian Railways prepares a reservation chart. This process finalises the allocation of seats and berths. Typically, a first chart is prepared about four to eight hours before the train's scheduled departure. This chart allocates
confirmed berths to passengers, moves some from the waiting list to Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) or confirmed seats, and finalises the list of travellers. A second and final chart is then prepared about 30 minutes before departure, which accounts for any last-minute cancellations or bookings. It’s in the window between these two charts that opportunities for last-minute tickets arise.
The 'Current Booking' Lifeline
Indian Railways offers a facility called 'Current Booking' that allows passengers to book vacant seats after the first chart is prepared. When the first chart is made, any unbooked seats, or seats that have become vacant due to cancellations, are released into this pool. These seats can then be booked on a first-come, first-served basis. The key advantage is that any ticket booked under 'Current Booking' is a guaranteed, confirmed ticket; you cannot get an RAC or Waitlisted ticket through this method. This system provides a valuable opportunity for those with urgent travel plans who couldn't secure a ticket in advance.
How to Book Online After Charting
Booking a ticket through the 'Current Booking' facility online is straightforward. You can use the IRCTC website or the mobile app. Simply search for your train just as you would for a regular booking. If seats are available after the chart has been prepared, the status will show as 'CURRENT_AVBL' or 'Current Available' along with the number of vacant seats. You can then proceed to enter passenger details and make the payment to receive a confirmed e-ticket instantly, complete with your coach and berth number. This online window typically closes when the second and final chart is prepared, about 30 minutes before the train's departure.
The Station Counter Option
For travellers who are already at the railway station or prefer not to book online, there is an offline alternative. Vacant seats available under the 'Current Booking' quota can also be booked at the Passenger Reservation (PRS) counters at railway stations. These counters have access to the same real-time availability data. This is a useful option for people who make a spontaneous decision to travel or may not have reliable internet access while on the move. The process is similar to booking a regular ticket at the counter, but you are assured a confirmed berth.
An Attractive Discount on Fares
An added incentive for using the 'Current Booking' facility is a potential discount. Indian Railways often offers a 10% discount on the base fare for tickets booked for vacant berths after the first chart is prepared. This discount applies to the last price at which a ticket in that class was sold before charting. The aim is to maximise occupancy and offer a better deal to passengers booking at the last minute. While this discount is a significant benefit, the primary advantage remains the ability to secure a confirmed seat on a train that might have appeared fully booked just hours earlier.
Important Rules to Remember
While 'Current Booking' is a fantastic feature, there are a few rules to keep in mind. Once a ticket is booked through this facility, the boarding point cannot be changed. Furthermore, modifications to passenger details like name, age, or gender are not permitted on these PNRs. Only senior citizen and disabled concessions are typically allowed. It's also important to remember that these tickets are non-cancellable through the automated online system after chart preparation, and any refunds must be pursued by filing a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR).
