Train journeys in India are getting a spectacular upgrade. Southern Railway has introduced a Vistadome coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, promising passengers an immersive experience of the Western Ghats' breathtaking natural beauty.
The Vistadome Experience
Imagine travelling
through lush green valleys and misty mountains with an uninterrupted, panoramic view. That is the experience the Vistadome coach aims to provide. These specially designed coaches, manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory, feature large glass windows and a transparent glass roof, making the journey itself the main attraction. The coach attached to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express has a seating capacity for 42 passengers. Key features include seats that can rotate 180 degrees, allowing you to always face the direction of the best scenery, and a glass roof that is electronically controlled to switch between transparent and translucent modes. With amenities like Wi-Fi-based information systems, charging sockets for every passenger, and an observation lounge, these coaches turn a simple train ride into a luxurious sightseeing tour.
A Journey Through Natural Splendour
While the entire route from Madurai in Tamil Nadu to Guruvayur in Kerala is scenic, the crown jewel of this journey is the Sengottai-Punalur ghat section. This stretch winds through the heart of the Western Ghats, offering views of dense forests, deep valleys, and cascading waterfalls like Palaruvi and Kazhuthurutty. The train navigates numerous tunnels and bridges, including the historic 13-Arch Bridge (Pathimoonu Kannara Bridge), a marvel of colonial-era engineering. The route provides access to popular tourist destinations such as the Thenmala Ecotourism area and the Courtallam waterfalls near Tenkasi, making the journey ideal for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. The service conveniently connects two major pilgrimage sites, the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai and the Guruvayur Temple in Kerala, blending spirituality with natural exploration.
Schedule and Itinerary Details
This new Vistadome service is being offered on a temporary trial basis from late October 2026 to mid-January 2027, giving travellers a limited window to experience this unique journey. The coach is attached to Train No. 16327, departing from Madurai, and Train No. 16328, for the return journey from Guruvayur. From Madurai, the service runs on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The return journey from Guruvayur with the Vistadome coach operates on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. This schedule makes it perfect for a long weekend getaway. Given the coach is part of a regular express service and not a dedicated tourist train, it will follow the existing timetable and stops along the way.
How to Book and Fare Information
Booking a seat on this scenic ride requires some advance planning. Reservations are open and can be made through official Indian Railway booking channels. In booking applications, the Vistadome coach is listed under the class code 'EV' (Executive Chair Car). Fares vary depending on the distance. While the basic fare starts around ₹515, the full journey from Madurai to Guruvayur costs approximately ₹1,875 per person. Other indicative fares include Madurai to Punalur at ₹1,010 and Madurai to Kollam at ₹1,140. Due to immense initial interest, tickets sold out quickly for the first few weeks, with waiting lists extending for months, so it is advisable to book well in advance.
