What is the New Tatkal Token System?
Indian Railways has begun implementing a new token-based system for passengers booking Tatkal tickets at physical Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. The initiative, which started rolling out at select stations from August 1, is designed to eliminate
the long, often overnight, queues that form hours before the booking window opens. Instead of a chaotic first-come, first-served line, passengers will now be given a sequentially numbered token that determines their turn at the counter. The primary goal is to make the offline booking process more organised, convenient, and transparent for everyone involved, reducing overcrowding and disputes. This change, however, only applies to counter bookings; the process for booking Tatkal tickets online via the IRCTC website or app remains unchanged.
How It Works: A Step-by-Step Guide
Navigating the new system is straightforward. First, passengers need to visit the railway reservation counter during a specific token distribution window, which occurs before the actual Tatkal booking begins. Upon arrival, you will be issued a token with a sequence number. After receiving your token, you can wait for your number to be announced or displayed, rather than standing in a queue for hours. When your number is called, you proceed to the counter with your completed reservation form and valid identification to complete the booking. This structured approach ensures that your place in the line is secured by the token, not by how early you arrived to wait.
Reviewing the Booking Window: The New Timings to Know
While the core Tatkal booking times remain the same, the introduction of the token system creates a new, earlier window that passengers must be aware of. The actual booking for AC classes still begins at 10:00 AM, and for non-AC classes at 11:00 AM, one day before the journey. However, the crucial change is the token distribution time. For AC class Tatkal tickets, tokens are typically distributed between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. For non-AC (Sleeper) classes, the token window is from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. Passengers must now plan to arrive at the station during this specific token distribution window, not necessarily hours in advance. Arriving before 8:30 AM no longer guarantees a top spot.
Priority Categories and Token Limits
The system also introduces priority categories to streamline the process further. 'Category A' is for passengers booking tickets for themselves or their family members, and they will be served first. To qualify for this category, you must present your own valid photo ID and that of the travelling family member. 'Category B' includes all other bookings and will be handled after Category A is complete. It's also important to note that counters will issue a limited number of tokens—initially around 10 for AC and 15 for non-AC classes, though this can vary by station. If seats remain after all token holders are served, they will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
Where Is the System Being Implemented?
The token system is being introduced in phases and is not yet available at every station across India. The initial rollout from August 1 is focused on selected stations, particularly within the West Central Railway zone, including all stations in the Kota Division. Passenger associations have welcomed the reform and are advocating for its expansion to other railway divisions if the pilot proves successful. Because the rollout is gradual, travellers are advised to check with their local PRS counter to confirm if the token system is active before planning their visit.
Tips for a Smoother Booking Experience
To make the most of the new system, preparation is still key. Always carry a valid, government-issued photo ID like an Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, or Passport. It is also wise to have the passenger details for your entire party written down clearly to fill out the reservation form quickly and accurately. The new system makes the process more orderly, but the demand for Tatkal tickets remains high. Ensuring all your documents and information are ready when your token number is called will help make the final transaction swift and successful.
