Your Secret Weapon: Current Booking
Indian Railways has a feature called 'Current Booking' designed specifically for last-minute travellers. It’s a system that allows passengers to book vacant seats after the preparation of the first reservation chart. This means that even if a train appeared
fully booked or had a long waiting list days before, seats that remain unoccupied due to last-minute cancellations or unutilised quotas become available for instant booking. It essentially serves two purposes: it gives a spontaneous traveller a chance to board the train, and it helps the railways avoid running with empty seats. Unlike other booking types, current booking only issues confirmed tickets—you won't be given a Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) or a waitlisted status.
Understanding the Timeline Is Key
To take advantage of current booking, you need to understand the charting process. Indian Railways prepares the first reservation chart about four hours before the scheduled departure of a train from its originating station. The current booking window opens immediately after this first chart is prepared. This window stays open until about 30 minutes before the train's departure, which is when the second and final chart is prepared and handed to the Ticket Travel Examiner (TTE). This four-hour window is your golden opportunity. A train that showed no availability earlier might suddenly have confirmed seats pop up.
Current Booking vs. Tatkal: What's the Difference?
Many travellers confuse current booking with the Tatkal scheme, but they are very different. Tatkal booking opens one day in advance of the travel date (at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC) and comes with additional charges. It is a separate quota of seats reserved for urgent travel plans. Current booking, on the other hand, deals with the seats left vacant after the chart is made. There are no extra 'current booking' charges; you pay the normal base fare for the ticket. In fact, sometimes Indian Railways may offer a discount of 10% on the base fare for seats booked under this facility to encourage filling up the train.
How to Book a Current Ticket
You can book these last-minute seats both online and offline. The easiest method is through the IRCTC website or the official mobile app. Simply log in, enter your source and destination stations, and select the journey date as you normally would. When the list of trains appears, look for the availability status. If seats are available through this facility, it will be clearly mentioned as 'CURR_AVBL' or 'Current Available' along with the number of seats. You can then proceed to book it like any other e-ticket. Alternatively, you can also visit the 'Current Reservation Counter' at major railway stations to book these tickets in person.
Important Rules to Remember
While current booking is a fantastic option, there are a few rules to keep in mind. Once a ticket is booked through this facility, cancellation is generally not allowed, and refunds are not granted unless the train itself is cancelled. You can, however, file a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) for a partial refund in specific cases. Furthermore, you cannot change the boarding point or any passenger details like name or age on a ticket booked under the current booking system. Only confirmed tickets are issued, and while senior citizen and disabled concessions may be applicable, most other concessions are not.
