A Historic Launch from European Soil
On September 5, 2026, Munich-based Isar Aerospace achieved what no privately-funded company had done before: it successfully launched a rocket into orbit from continental Europe. The company’s Spectrum rocket, on only its second flight, lifted off from Andøya
Spaceport in Norway, delivering several small satellites into orbit. This mission, dubbed 'Onward and Upward', marked a dramatic turnaround from its first attempt in March 2025, which ended shortly after liftoff. The success was hailed by leaders across Europe, including the European Space Agency (ESA) and the German government, as a landmark moment. It instantly established Isar Aerospace as a frontrunner in Europe's new commercial space race and the first to meet a key orbital milestone set by the ESA's Launcher Challenge.
Europe’s Urgent Need for a Ride to Space
Isar's success couldn't have come at a more critical time. For years, Europe has been facing a 'launcher crisis'. The retirement of the reliable Ariane 5, significant delays in the deployment of its successor Ariane 6, and the loss of access to Russian Soyuz rockets following geopolitical tensions left the continent without a consistent, independent way to launch its own satellites. This created a major bottleneck, forcing European satellite operators to rely on foreign providers, most notably American competitor SpaceX. This dependency raised serious concerns about 'strategic autonomy'—the ability for Europe to pursue its own space-based objectives in areas like navigation, Earth observation, and security without relying on other nations.
The New Wave of Space Entrepreneurs
Isar Aerospace, founded in 2018, is at the forefront of a new generation of European space companies stepping in to fill this void. Much like SpaceX revolutionised the American launch industry, private startups like Isar, Rocket Factory Augsburg, and PLD Space are bringing a more agile, cost-effective, and commercially-driven approach to the European market. These companies are building what are known as 'microlaunchers', designed to serve the booming market for small satellites. The Spectrum rocket, for instance, is a 28-meter, two-stage vehicle designed to carry payloads of up to 1,000 kilograms into low Earth orbit. This vertical integration, using techniques like 3D printing for engines and developing hardware in-house, allows them to innovate quickly and reduce costs.
More Than a Business: A Strategic Imperative
The rise of companies like Isar Aerospace is about more than just business; it's a strategic priority for Europe. The successful launch from Andøya, Norway, was the first orbital launch from Western Europe, which has historically launched from its spaceport in French Guiana, South America. This establishes a new, sovereign launch capability directly from the continent, a point noted by NATO as a boost to the resilience of the wider space infrastructure its allies depend on. Government support, from both national space agencies and the ESA's 'Boost!' program, has been crucial in nurturing these private ventures. The goal is to create a diverse and competitive ecosystem of launch providers, ensuring Europe is never again left without a ride to space.
