A Study with a Clear Goal
The science around indoor air quality has increasingly pointed a finger at gas stoves. These common kitchen appliances release nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a pollutant known to irritate the lungs and worsen respiratory conditions like asthma. With this in mind,
researchers at MetroHealth System in Ohio set out to conduct the first-ever study to see if replacing gas stoves with electric ones could directly improve asthma symptoms. The plan was ambitious: to recruit 1,200 households near Cleveland with residents suffering from poorly controlled asthma, replace their gas stoves with new electric induction models for free, and track their health. The participants included both adults and children, who logged their symptoms, medication use, and activity limitations before and after the switch.
An Unexpected Halt
The study began in December 2024 with funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, but it hit a major roadblock. In May 2025, the project's funding was terminated by the Trump administration, forcing it to end prematurely. This meant the researchers could not reach their target of 1,200 households. Instead, they had to wrap up the project after completing the stove replacement and follow-up for just 85 individuals in 72 homes. The abrupt end left over 1,100 households unable to participate and forced the project to lay off around 20 staff members. With such a small sample size and a shortened timeline, the team's expectations for statistically significant results were understandably low.
Surprising and Significant Results
Against the odds, the data from the small group showed a remarkable impact. Participants, on average, saw their asthma symptoms improve from a 'moderate' to a 'mild' classification. The improvements were described by the lead researcher as being similar to or even greater than those seen in clinical trials for common asthma medications. Specifically, emergency room visits and hospitalizations for asthma fell by 70%, and missed days of work or school due to the condition dropped by about 80%. Alongside these health gains, air quality monitors in the homes confirmed a 70% decrease in indoor nitrogen dioxide levels after the switch. The results were so clear that researchers were surprised by the very large effect size, even in a scaled-down study.
Explaining the Improvement
While the dramatic drop in indoor NO2 is the most likely driver of the health benefits, the study did have limitations. Because it was cut short, it did not include a control group of people who kept their gas stoves, which makes it harder to rule out a placebo effect. However, the lead researchers noted the scale of the improvement was much larger than what is typically seen with placebo drugs. The participants also expressed very high satisfaction with their new electric induction stoves, with 98% reporting they were satisfied or very satisfied, compared to just 41% for their old gas stoves. This positive experience could have contributed to a general sense of well-being. It is important to note that the findings apply to individuals with poorly controlled asthma and may not be the same for those with milder cases.
The Bigger Picture on Stoves and Health
This Ohio study adds a compelling, if incomplete, piece to the growing conversation about the health impacts of gas appliances. For years, scientists have found correlations between gas cooking and respiratory issues, especially in children. While some broader analyses have found no significant link, this was the first U.S. study to directly intervene by swapping the stoves and measuring the outcome. The results suggest that for vulnerable populations, reducing indoor air pollution from cooking could be a powerful, non-pharmaceutical tool for managing chronic illness. Researchers acknowledge that more and larger studies are needed to confirm these findings and understand long-term outcomes. However, the initial data provides a strong argument for considering the health implications of our everyday home appliances.
