An Act of Self-Defence
The story ignites when Anju Salgaonkar (Ishita Dutta), the elder daughter of protagonist Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn), is secretly filmed at a nature camp. The culprit, Sam Deshmukh, is the son of the Inspector General of Police, Meera Deshmukh (Tabu).
Sam uses the video to blackmail Anju, demanding sexual favours. When he appears at her home, a confrontation ensues. Sam offers to spare Anju if her mother, Nandini (Shriya Saran), sleeps with him instead. In the struggle to destroy Sam's phone, Anju accidentally strikes him with a pipe, leading to his instant death. Panicked, Nandini and Anju bury the body in a compost pit in their garden, an act witnessed by their younger daughter, Anu.
The Fourth-Grade Dropout's Masterplan
When Vijay, a humble cable operator and an avid film fanatic, returns home, he learns of the incident and immediately takes control. His mind, sharpened by countless hours of watching crime thrillers, begins to construct a seemingly foolproof plan to protect his family. Understanding that the police's case would be built on circumstantial evidence, Vijay decides to create an unbreakable alibi. He disposes of Sam's car and phone, then orchestrates a family trip to Panaji for a religious sermon, a movie, and a meal.
Building the Perfect Alibi
Vijay's genius lies not just in the trip itself, but in its meticulous construction. He carefully collects receipts and tickets from their excursion. But the true masterstroke is that he makes the family repeat the exact same trip a few days later. By doing this, he conditions the witnesses—the restaurant owner, the bus conductor, the ticket vendor—to remember their faces and associate them with the dates of Sam's disappearance. When the police, led by the relentless Meera Deshmukh, investigate, every witness confidently corroborates the Salgaonkar family's alibi, cementing their story of being away when the crime occurred.
Withstanding the Pressure
Despite the perfect alibi, Meera suspects Vijay is lying. She has the family arrested and subjected to brutal interrogation by Sub-inspector Gaitonde, who already holds a grudge against Vijay. The family holds firm, repeating the story Vijay coached them on. The pressure eventually causes young Anu to break, revealing that she saw her mother and sister burying a body in the compost pit. The police dig up the pit, but instead of a human body, they find the carcass of a calf. Vijay had anticipated this possibility and moved Sam's body long before.
The Ultimate Hiding Place
This leads to the film's most iconic reveal. Where did Vijay hide Sam's body? In a place no one would ever think to look: under the floor of the very police station that was being constructed at the time of the investigation. In the film's closing moments, Vijay is seen leaving the newly inaugurated police station, with a flashback confirming he buried the body at the construction site. He hid the evidence directly under the noses of the law enforcement officers who were hunting for it, creating a near-perfect crime that leaves the police without a body, and therefore, without a murder case.
