What Is the New Token System?
The chaotic queues and long waits for counter-booked Tatkal tickets are being replaced by a more organised process. Indian Railways, starting with the West Central Railway zone, has introduced a token-based system effective August 1. Instead of waiting
for hours, passengers can now collect a numbered token during a specific time window and return to the counter when their turn comes. This change is aimed at reducing overcrowding at reservation centres, making the process more efficient, and ensuring passengers can complete their booking in a single, more structured visit. The system applies only to offline bookings at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and does not affect online bookings via the IRCTC website or app.
Arrival Time Is Crucial: New Token Timings
Under the new rules, your arrival time at the station is more important than ever. Tokens are distributed in a short window before the actual booking begins. For AC class Tatkal tickets, tokens will be issued between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM, with booking commencing at 10:00 AM. For non-AC classes, including Sleeper, tokens are distributed between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM, ahead of the 11:00 AM booking start time. This schedule ensures that passengers only need to be present during these specific slots to secure their place in the queue, eliminating the need to show up hours in advance.
How the System Works Step-by-Step
The process is designed to be straightforward. Passengers should visit the railway reservation counter during the designated token distribution window for their class of travel. Upon arrival, they will receive a token with a sequence number. They can then wait for their number to be announced or displayed before proceeding to the counter to submit the reservation form, show their ID, and make the payment. Initially, each counter is expected to issue a limited number of tokens — typically 10 for AC and 15 for non-AC classes — though this may be adjusted based on demand. If seats are still available after all token holders are served, walk-in passengers will be attended to on a first-come, first-served basis.
Photo ID and Priority Categories
A valid, government-issued photo ID is mandatory. Passengers must carry documents such as an Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving Licence to receive a token and book a ticket. The new system also introduces two priority categories. Category A is for passengers booking tickets for themselves or their immediate family members and will be given first preference. To qualify, one must produce their own valid photo ID and that of the family member. Category B includes all other passengers and will be served after Category A bookings are complete. Importantly, the tokens are strictly non-transferable; the person to whom the token is issued must be the one to book the ticket.
The Goal: Fairness and Efficiency
The primary objective behind this overhaul is to bring order and transparency to the high-demand Tatkal booking process at counters. By managing crowds and eliminating the need for passengers to wait in multiple queues or for extended periods, Indian Railways aims to improve the overall passenger experience. The system is also intended to curb the activities of touts and ensure that genuine travellers have a fairer chance of securing last-minute tickets. The clear rules regarding photo ID and non-transferable tokens are key components of this effort to streamline the process and make it more secure for everyone.
