A One-Stop Solution for Wildlife Lovers
Planning a trip to one of Maharashtra's famed tiger reserves has traditionally been a multi-step challenge for tourists. It involved separately booking train tickets, finding suitable accommodation near the forest, and, most difficult of all, securing
a safari permit through online portals that often sell out within minutes. To simplify this process, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has partnered with the Maharashtra Forest Department to launch integrated wildlife tourism packages. The initiative, named 'Vandarshan', was announced on International Tiger Day on July 29, 2026, creating a single-window booking system for a complete safari experience. This collaboration aims to make the state's rich biodiversity more accessible to families, photographers, and first-time safari-goers.
What's Included in the 'Vandarshan' Packages?
The core appeal of these packages is their all-inclusive nature. With one booking, a traveller gets a confirmed train ticket, accommodation in a hotel or resort, local road transfers from the station to the hotel and safari gates, and, most importantly, an assured safari permit. This removes the biggest uncertainty in safari planning. Anyone who has tried to book a permit for a popular zone in Tadoba knows the odds; they are released 120 days in advance and are often gone instantly. By providing a guaranteed permit, IRCTC offers certainty that was previously hard to come by. The packages are typically structured as four-night, five-day itineraries, designed to provide a comprehensive experience. Five curated travel plans are being introduced to cater to different interests, from birdwatching to wildlife photography.
Which Parks and Sanctuaries Are Covered?
The initial phase of the Vandarshan initiative covers six popular wildlife destinations in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. This includes four of the state's six major tiger reserves: Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench National Park, Bor Tiger Reserve, and Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. Additionally, the packages also provide access to two well-known wildlife sanctuaries: Umred-Karhandla and Tipeshwar. This selection offers a fantastic cross-section of central India's wildlife habitats, famed for their healthy tiger populations and diverse ecosystems. It is important to note that two of Maharashtra's tiger reserves, Melghat and Sahyadri, are not part of the initial rollout.
How to Book Your Safari Adventure
Booking these packages is streamlined through IRCTC's official tourism portal. Travellers can visit the IRCTC Tourism website and search for the 'Vandarshan' or specific wildlife packages for Maharashtra. The tours are designed to originate from major hubs, with initial packages departing from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) via the Vidarbha Express. This train provides access to railway stations like Nagpur, Wardha, and Gondia, which serve as gateways to the different parks. For instance, Nagpur is the primary hub for Pench and Tadoba, while Gondia is conveniently located for visiting Navegaon-Nagzira. Before finalising, it is advisable to check the specific details of each package, including how many safaris are included and whether they are in the highly sought-after core zones or the buffer areas.
Is This Packaged Safari Right for You?
This new offering is a game-changer for many, but it's worth considering if it fits your travel style. For families, first-time visitors, or anyone who values convenience, the answer is a resounding yes. The hassle of coordinating multiple bookings is eliminated, and the guaranteed permit is invaluable. The cost of a single Tadoba jeep safari can range from ₹5,800 to over ₹12,800 depending on the day, so having this bundled provides significant peace of mind. However, seasoned wildlife enthusiasts or those who prefer complete control over their itinerary—choosing specific gates, guides, or boutique lodges—might still opt for independent planning. The IRCTC packages offer a structured tour, which trades some flexibility for immense convenience and accessibility. The initiative successfully lowers the barrier to entry, inviting more people to responsibly experience the wonders of Maharashtra's forests.
