A One-Stop Solution for Wildlife Lovers
For years, wildlife enthusiasts have navigated a complex web of bookings to visit Maharashtra's tiger country. Securing a confirmed train ticket, finding suitable accommodation, and, most crucially, obtaining a coveted safari permit often felt like separate,
stressful tasks. Now, a new collaboration between the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and the Maharashtra Forest Department aims to change that. Announced on International Tiger Day, the initiative, named 'Vandarshan', offers all-in-one packages that bundle every component of the journey. This means travellers can make a single booking that covers their train journey, local road transfers in air-conditioned vehicles, resort stays, meals, and guaranteed safari permits. The goal is to make these incredible natural habitats more accessible and encourage sustainable tourism.
Maharashtra's Premier Tiger Country
The tours focus on the Vidarbha region, often called the 'Tiger Capital of India'. Initially, the packages cover six key protected areas. This includes four major tiger reserves: Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, famous for its high tiger density; Pench National Park, the setting that inspired 'The Jungle Book'; Bor Tiger Reserve; and Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. Additionally, the tours include Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary and Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. This curated list gives travellers access to some of the most biodiverse forests in Central India, home not just to tigers but also leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs (dholes), gaur, and a rich variety of birdlife. The partnership ensures that a portion of safari permits are allocated to these packages, solving the biggest hurdle for many would-be visitors.
How the Journey Works
The model is designed for convenience, combining rail and road travel seamlessly. Most tours are structured as four-night, five-day itineraries. The journey typically begins with an overnight train from a major city like Mumbai. For instance, packages starting from Mumbai use the Vidarbha Express to reach Nagpur, which serves as the central hub for this wildlife circuit. Upon arrival in Nagpur, travellers are met and transferred to air-conditioned vehicles for the road journey to their designated wildlife resort near the national park. The following days are dedicated to morning and evening jeep safaris, allowing ample opportunity to explore the forests. After the safari experiences, guests are driven back to Nagpur to board their return train, completing the end-to-end managed tour.
What the Packages Include
The primary appeal of these 'Vandarshan' packages is their all-inclusive nature. A single payment covers most of the essential costs, providing clarity and peace of mind. The standard inclusions are confirmed train tickets in the chosen class, all road transfers between the station, resort, and safari gates, and accommodation in well-regarded hotels or resorts. All meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—are typically part of the package. Most importantly, the cost includes the pre-booked and guaranteed forest safari permits and the fees for the jeep and the mandatory guide. This simplifies budgeting significantly. Travellers generally only need to account for personal expenses, camera fees (which are charged separately by the forest department), and any optional activities not specified in the itinerary.
Planning and Booking Your Safari
Booking these integrated tours is straightforward. Interested travellers can visit the official IRCTC Tourism website to find details about the various itineraries and departure dates. On the website, you can navigate to the 'Holidays' section and look for 'Rail Tour Packages' or search for the specific wildlife destinations like Tadoba or Pench. The packages are designed to cater to different groups, including families, photographers, and first-time safari-goers. Given the high demand for wildlife tourism, especially during peak seasons (October to June), it is advisable to book well in advance. This not only secures your spot but also ensures you get your preferred travel dates, as both train tickets and safari permits are limited resources. The launch of these packages marks a significant step in promoting Maharashtra's wild heart, offering a structured, reliable, and enjoyable way to experience its natural treasures.
