Mercedes-Benz has filed a patent application for a sophisticated control system designed to allow a two-axle vehicle to become amphibious. The core idea is to enable an SUV to enter a body of water, float stably on the surface, navigate, and then climb
back onto dry land without assistance. This isn't just about deep-water wading, which many off-roaders can already do; this is about full-fledged flotation. The patent, filed with the German patent office by inventor Joerg Kneip, outlines a comprehensive system rather than just a single component. While many immediately think of the iconic G-Class, especially the new electric G 580, the patent itself doesn't name a specific model. However, the technology described aligns well with the advanced capabilities of the electric G-Wagen.
How Does The 'Floating' Technology Work?
The system relies on several clever engineering concepts working in unison. To achieve buoyancy, the patent proposes using removable flotation devices, likely made of foam or inflatable materials, that would be installed inside the vehicle's wheel arches. An onboard control unit could even adjust the inflation of these devices at each corner to compensate for an uneven load or strong water currents, ensuring the vehicle remains level. Once floating, propulsion and steering would be handled by the wheels themselves. By using the vehicle's adaptive suspension, the front wheels could be lowered deeper into the water to act like rudders. For an electric vehicle with four independent motors, like the G 580, the system could precisely vary the torque and rotation speed of each wheel—even spinning them in opposite directions—to steer the vehicle or hold it steady against a current. The patent also considers how these devices would be stored, suggesting the spare tire compartment could house the deflated bladders, which could be filled by the car’s standard air compressor.
