Start with the Right Prep
Before you even think about styling, the foundation for a frizz-free day is set in the wash and prep stage. During the monsoon, your hair needs moisture, but it reacts poorly to the excess humidity in the air. Start by using a gentle, moisturising shampoo
and always follow up with a conditioner, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. Once a week, treat your locks to a deep conditioning mask to restore hydration. When you get out of the shower, gently squeeze excess water with a soft microfibre towel instead of rubbing, which can rough up the hair cuticle and create more frizz. Finally, apply a lightweight, anti-frizz serum or leave-in conditioner to damp hair. This creates a protective barrier that seals the hair cuticle, preventing it from absorbing too much moisture from the atmosphere. Avoid heavy styling products that can weigh hair down and make it look greasy in the humid weather.
The Classic Top Knot
When in doubt, put it up. The top knot is a timeless and incredibly practical choice for rainy days. It keeps your hair completely off your face and neck, protecting it from the damp, sticky weather. The beauty of this style is its versatility; it can be sleek and polished for work or intentionally messy for a casual day out. For a quick and secure bun, gather your hair into a high ponytail. You can back-comb the ponytail slightly to add volume before twisting it around its base. Secure the knot with bobby pins or a strong hair tie. A messy bun works particularly well in the monsoon, as any minor flyaways or frizz will just add to the relaxed, effortless vibe of the style. For a more polished look, smooth down any stray hairs with a light-hold hairspray.
The Elegant Fishtail Braid
Braids are arguably the most effective hairstyle for controlling frizz because they keep the hair strands neatly contained and minimize their exposure to humidity. While any braid works, the fishtail braid offers a stylish and slightly more intricate look that holds up beautifully through a damp day. To create it, divide your hair into two large sections. Take a small piece of hair from the outside of the left section, cross it over to the right, and merge it with the right section. Then, repeat on the other side: take a small piece from the outside of the right section and cross it over to the left. Continue this pattern all the way down and secure with an elastic. You can gently pull at the sides of the braid to create a fuller, more voluminous look without compromising its structure. This style is perfect for keeping long hair manageable and tangle-free.
The Sleek Wrapped Ponytail
A simple ponytail can still fall victim to a halo of frizz in high humidity. The key to making it monsoon-proof is to focus on a sleek finish. A low ponytail is a chic and sophisticated option that minimises frizz effectively. After prepping your hair with an anti-frizz serum, brush it back smoothly and secure it at the nape of your neck with a hair tie. To elevate the look and add an extra layer of security, take a small, half-inch section of hair from the underside of the ponytail. Wrap this section around the hair tie to conceal it, and secure the end with a bobby pin tucked underneath. This simple trick not only looks polished but also helps keep the base of the ponytail tight and tidy, reducing the chances of flyaways appearing around the crown.
The Braided Crown Updo
For a hairstyle that is both romantic and incredibly resilient against humidity, the braided crown is an excellent choice. This updo keeps all of your hair securely off your neck and face, making it one of the best defences against the effects of damp weather. Start by parting your hair down the middle and creating two simple three-strand braids or French braids, one on each side. Once both braids are secured with small elastics, lift one braid and lay it across the top of your head like a headband, pinning it in place. Do the same with the second braid, tucking its end underneath the first one to create a seamless crown. This style not only prevents frizz but also stays put all day long, making it perfect for both work and special occasions during the rainy season.
