How the New Scanners Work
The technology driving this change is Computed Tomography (CT) scanning, similar to what is used in the medical field. Unlike traditional X-ray machines that produce a flat 2D image, CT scanners create a high-resolution 3D view of a bag's contents. This detailed, rotatable image allows security staff and advanced AI algorithms to inspect items from every angle without them being physically removed from the bag. The system can more accurately differentiate between benign items and potential threats, enhancing security while simultaneously speeding up the passenger journey.
A Gradual Rollout Across Terminals
While the news is welcome for all travellers, it's important to note that the changes are not happening overnight. The upgrade is a gradual programme, with new machines being installed as older equipment is replaced across all three terminals. The rollout has already begun, and some travellers may have already experienced the new, seamless process. However, because the upgrade is phased, passengers should not assume that every security lane will be operating under the new rules just yet. The ultimate plan is to replace all the old technology so every passenger has the same convenient experience.

Therefore, it's wise to pack as you normally would, keeping laptops and liquids easily accessible. Crucially, the rules around the quantity of liquids—generally containers of no more than 100ml—remain in place for hand luggage. The new scanners simplify the screening process, but they do not change the fundamental restrictions on what you can carry on board.
